MOT Advice

Post

Back to the top
Good Day to you all, 2 quick questions regarding MOT testing, hope someone can help:

1)  Is the headlight 'Full Beam' tell-tale blue light in the dash checked for operation on an MOT?

2)  Is the rear fog light tell-tale light on the dash switch checked for operation on an MOT?

I reckon you know why I ask, yes you guessed it, mine don't work, haha

Many Thanks

PJ

I'd guess so because they're important indicators that your either blinding someone in front of you or someone behind you!  :thumbs:

But is that the technical answer?
No because I haven't done an MOT in England for nearly 21 years!  :lol:

My thinking is along those lines and I reckon they will be tested, might ask my local tester.

Thanks

   Deleted as it wasn't factual advice, which you now have in the next post.

1. yes for vehicles first used after 1st april 1986
2. yes after 1st april 1980

also depends on the testers actually noticing and/or bothering about it. some more lenient than others, some may be a bit more strict and go by the rule 'if its fitted it should work' easier to have them work than argue with the tester about it tbh ;)

This is a summary of how I fixed the main beam LED.

1st remove cluster from car, on a MK1 this involves removing half of the interior first…

to dismantle the cluster I removed the 8 screws (two not shown in pic to far right) and the lights that hold the blue circuit board down, highlighted in red….

this then allowed me to gently lift out the 3 main components (rev counter, LEDs/fuel gauge and speedo) as one held together with the blue circuit film from the cluster housing. Then when turned over I removed the black plastic LED 'shield' to reveal my problem. As suspected when built there were no blue LEDs so VW used a clear LED?/filament bulb that had blown and a blue plastic mask;

off to Maplin to get a blue LED, unfortunatly they only had chav type bright blue LEDs, I got a clear one and this other shown with the orginal blown white LED stylee filament bulb. They were 3mm so could be used under the blue plastic mask so not a big problem. Insert the right way, short leg or flat side = -ve connection;

Put everything back togther and test. Is brighter than the other LEDs but not as bright as camera makes out;

If I was to do it again I would have used a lower 1.5cd output LED, instead of the brighter3.2 cd type that I did use.

My MOT guy sometimes moans about the fog light tell-tale as it is quite dim and you have to peer at the switch at just the right angle to see that it is illuminated, MK1 electric's…..
