Owner of the mandarin orange series 1 driver.

As per the title, chatting to a guy by the Crazy Quiff stand on Saturday night, sorry I can't remember your name.

We were talking about what a series 1 Driver looked like when new and what was fitted as standard. I mentioned a post on here a year or two back where somebody was looking for thier old green series 1 Driver. I've found the post and here it is! There are a few other pics dotted around the net that I've found and the ones I've seen that look original also have the Golf Driver badge on the grill.

I hope this helps with your plans for your car. I look forward to meeting again.

Matt.

D_Martijn   thanks for that, it is a nice car isn't it! It's finished to a high standard and nice to see it left as a small block.

I had hoped to chat with you about your Golf as it's a lovely car finished to a high standard and again nice to see left as a small block.

I know these cars are not very powerful but they are becoming rare now and it seems a shame to stick a big lump in them.

Daytona I hope the link helps with your plans.

I think there are possibly less than 10 s1 drivers left?  They didn't have a lot of power but the gearbox ratios were excellent!! I could get nearly 40 in first and over 70 in 2nd!!

If I'd have known how rare these cars were, I wouldn't have messed with mine so much!! Still, easily reversible if I wanted to go back.

I need to get these badges sent off to Daytona but they need a bit of work first.

Hi Matt, Just seen you post!
Thanks for your kind comments! (and from the Belgium guy  too!) about my car ( Its known here in Norfolk as"The Mandarin Menace" -well, it was [a menace] when it kept stopping, at random, on the roads- usually at a roundabout.. :') normal for norfolk I suppose
it was the proverbial rust in tank/pipe syndrome after all, but now I am all in love with it  .
There is much to do as though it truly is a genuine Mandarin Driver, but, it needs the 'go faster' Gti side stripes, and to be correct the black plastic arches-though I personally love the painted wheel arch shape as it is, what do you all think? Orange and black do go together…. Also , the standard wheels  are missing though I bought a set at the gathering! the bumpers are not correct but I love them in chrome . I have bought and yet to collect a pair of black plastic ones off another member here though.
I now know that I have at last!! (thanks to Steve  ) bought a genuine Driver front badge off flea bay ,and, there's a chance of a damaged rear badge being found.?If anyone has a really good tailgate Golf Driver badge please let me know.
Also thanks to the knowledge of Steve, and John (green car on Crazy stand)I realise that the front slam panel was replaced with a series 2 but genuine VW one, and the rear tailgate is series 2 not 1series. The car was well rotten you see…So If anyone has a good series 1 panel for either the slam panel or rear hatch let me know.
The Mandarin Menace is not finished yet, but I appreciate your kind words and hope to see you all again soon.
P.S Matt, I am called Marcus, and was good to meet you too.
PPS I hadn't realised how few there are left :o .
PPPS Golf 1980,70mph in secondAnd 10K revs :'(   no doubt O_o  no wonder you replaced the engine ha ha

The gearbox was a QS code apparently?
I only ever revved it up to 8k rpm 😂

The original engine and box was long gone before I bought the car.

Thanks Yomp.
I thought the press car and the tale of the owner was very special.

Daytona Hi Marcus, thanks for the reply.

The kind words about your car are more than justified, it's a lovely car and a rare beast. I can't believe how rare they've become but it's good to see that you want it original.

Keep up the good work with it, I can imagine it's hard finding original bits for it now but definitely worth the search.

I look forward to meeting again and having another look around the Mandarin Menace.

Matt.

Daytona  Well I found the picture but it doesn't answer your question - sorry. As suspected the tailgate is open. I think it was the only picture I ever had of it. At this point I'd sold it to my mate. My wife and I are on the left with the Scriocco. We'd just finished the Stratford on Avon Raft race race in 1996!

golf1980  Its got the black panel between the lights we spoke about the other day!;)Its one of the few cars I really regret selling but the rocco came along cheap at the time!
