mk1 golf cab cold start problems

Hi guys
in need of some advice if anybody can help, I have a mk1 golf cab 1991 LHD.
Having real problems with the car when cold, its starts first time but as soon as u give it a bit of gas it just constantly tries to cut out, so i'm having to wait till the car gets warm before I can set off, once the engines warm it does drive ok but idle is a bit jumpy.
I've been told about a cold start valve, but not sure where it is. has anybody any ideas please.

As you have a LHD and it's 1991 I think you should have a 'Digifant II' fuel injection system!

Mines an August 1990 and that's what I have.
From what I've been told, it's the Mk2 GTi lump with the power backed off.

If its a fuel injected car the picture Kenneth posted will be the same as your.

If it is fuel injected look at Kenneth's picture, see the top of the front suspension tower on the left hand side of his picture and those two little relay/switches - the cold start valve is on the end of the air intake chamber (forget it real name!). Next to them.

Its a fifth injector that supplies extra fuel during the initial/cold start cranking of the engine.

I had similar problem with my 1993 Clipper model (fuel injected) and I chased after an air leak, lack of fuel pressure, the Cold Start Valve, then the Warm Up Regulator then the two fuel pumps in the fuel tank - slave and master,  a partially blocked fuel filter or tank, faulty fuel injectors - on it went !   :ocf_emoticons__icon_evil:

I searched everywhere on websites trying to work out what it was - thus the advice led me on the chase through the fuel injection system mentioned above.

Sometimes it would start run perfectly, then it wouldn't or it would start rev, splutter then stall and spin over like it wanted to start but wouldn't catch on.
Worse still I be left stranded at locations  :banghead:

You know what it was? The bloody Auxiliary Air Valve a rarely mentioned part of the fuel/air intake system but a "villain" none the less!  :ninja:

It turned out to be the air intake valve inconsistently or not at all operating due to the relay that is located on the top row of the fuse box losing power - poor connection. If I bumped the curb or parked the car on a slight slope to the left the relay would break contact with its power source and therefore not activate when you returned to the car and tried to start it.

 Diagnosis:-
When you first crank the car you should hear two buzzing sounds - one being the fuel pump at the rear of the car the other being the air intake valve under the bonnet on the left hand side of the car near the battery. If you can only hear the fuel pump check the relay, its on the top row of the fuse box - press it in and try to crank it again. You can crank the car with your Right hand and touch the relay with your left at the same time (lie across the seats) - if the relay is working you'll feel it vibrate and suddenly you hear the air intake valve buzzing under the bonnet.

If you know someone with another fuel injected Mk1 cabby get them to start it for you. Once you hear the buzz under the bonnet over the other noises coming from the engine you'll know what I mean.

Let me know how you go. It could be a simple issue such as an air leak through a perished seal or one of the other items I checked.
However check that villainous Auxiliary Air Valve first!  :ocf_emoticons__eusa_doh:

Note: I forgot to mention the Auxiliary Air Valve has a separate relay to the fuel pump. That's why the fuel pump can operate but the air valve doesn't.

Looks like efi I reckon, to me not k-jet, and the item you are looking for, the equivalent is the alloy thing with the white connector in front of the inlet manifold I believe.

do you mean this connector, if you take the connector off once the engine is started it does stop the spluttering, but as soon as u connect it back on, the engine revs and then tries to cut out again.
is there a way of checking weather its working correctly ???

Definitely a Digifant II with out a doubt and not a K-jet!

You won't find many of them in the UK unless there are late Cabby's LHD.

Doesn't solve the problem though so calling rubjonny hi John what do you think mate? :)

Here's mine.

You might have to zoom in a bit but you'll see all three engines are the same!

yes that's the same engine, now the question is how good are you around it pal, cause the mechanics I've had on it just scratch there heads.

Maybe a manual for an 8 v mk2 golf gti would be usefull.

Funny you should say that because I've had a small but incredibility annoying problem with mine since the day I bought it three and a half years ago.

I've been to two VW Dealer, the second of which is Austria's largest here in Vienna.

My mechanic who does the the serving and MOT each year has tried and he can't solve it and he owns among others a Sportline!   :$

The issue is not the same as yours.

Mine just over revs when standing for no reason, hot or cold.
Air temperature or engine temperature it doesn't make a difference!  O_o

I had two posts running on this and after all this time I'm still none the bloody wiser.

Well and no disrespect to the other members who are trying to help but wait till John gets on line on Monday normally.
Let's see what he makes of it!

As for a manual that covers the injection system.

I understand that the Haynes manual for the Mk2 covers it.
After all it is the GTI lump.
But the big red 'Bentley' definitely does, I have that one it's from the US but it's all pretty much the same as ours!
You can still buy them but they don't come cheap normally.

Oh and one final thing when reading from the Bentley.
You have a Digifant II and not a Digifant I.

Unless your car was imported from California USA.  ;)
