Assuming that the driveshafts are removed, is it possible to remove the engine and gearbox together by supporting them and then lowering them out from underneath the car without fouling any part of the engine bay (car would be on a hydraulic ramp).
Because the car is in excellent condition and completely original, I don't want to have to remove the bonnet to lift the engine out - I'd lose the perfect shutlines and break the seal on the original paint and bolts that hold it on, so that's a no-no for me.
Does the engine / gearbox come out without catching anything (I'm more thinking the arms the wishbones fix onto)? Do the inlet and exhaust manifolds need to come off as well to create more room?
I'd appreciate comments from people who've done this job on cars with the larger 1.6 - 1.8 engines, not the smaller units.
