just as bozo announces the bringing forward of the replacement of petrol and diesel cars in 7 years time–where will that leave our classics in the future?i had the fleeting thought–about a nano second-of selling mine now to earn top dollar for it.
any predictions for the classic car market guys?

It's nine years time, 14 for hybrids. There are 30 million petrol/diesel ICE cars so at 2 million new EVs a year from 2030 will take 15 years to replace them all.

And thats assuming;
EVs drop by about 1/2 in new cost price so normal people can afford them (currently most are 5 Series/E Class prices not Fiesta £)

The national grid can cope, no govt for 30+yrs has had a long term plan for secure, reliable and affordable power generation. Importing wood from Canada , gas from middle east/Russia, nuke power from France and relying on renewables on cold still winter nights is non of those.

People carry on buying cars like the do now, People might stop changing their car every 2 or 3 years and with WFH have just one family car?

EVs will become less attractive when the 75% fuel duty tax is moved across to them and they are financially no better than todays ICE vehicles (this will prob be via road pricing)

If the EVs do become the norm, in 20-30 years petrol stations will beginning to stop selling petrol and parts supplies start to dry up. Running an ICE will be like running a EV was 10 years ago. In 40-50yrs MK1 Golfs will be like what London-Brighton veterens are now, a car show curiosity.

So whatever car you have been wanting to buy, mk1 golf or other, buy it now and enjoy it while you can...

Brilliant logical analysis Early. I'm very doubtful that things have been thought through..politicians wishful thinking again. Bozo is one of many politicians who will say what he thinks whichever pressure group will want to hear. I'm 63 already so don't think this will impact on my driving career. The thing I would say is that the replacing of present vehicles has to prove itself to be a viable alternative and improvement on what exists now.

im banking on running my Golf (once built of course) until such time as petrol stations are a thing of the past, or prohibitively expensive, and then either rebuilding the golf with an electric set-up or burying it in my back garden as a time capsule for some future generation to find

imagine a little kid digging it up in the garden 50 years hence–mum,dad whats an ICE?
unless of course the wonderful government make s such a horlix of the change to electric that the deadline is extended

Ban on new pure diesel or petrol cars 2030

Hybrids still allowed. I guess for another 20 plus years.

2050 to the end of life of most cars sold in 2050 another 20 years.

2070 the end for need of mass petrol or diesel. (By the way I am either 95 or dead by now)

Our museum pieces which are now impossible to find any spare part for unless 3D printed at home will be part of folk law like seeing a model T on the roads. They won’t be able to fly or drive themselves, trees will die as we drive past and people will vomit at the scent of sweet burning petrol.

Overall don’t worry we can continue to enjoy our motors until the bitter end. Also all petrol cars will be super rare so very expensive so long as they are not illegal.

Just imagine what watching the world rally championship will look like

Well, they can pry the keys to my gassers, as they lift the cold rigor mortised fingers from the fuel pump Handle.

Besides, after my 81 Diesel Rabbit, I love the smeel of diesel in the morning…. It smells a lot better than a motor burning up.

Hybrids only +5yrs after 2030 and cars get scrapped after about 15 years so think you need to -15/20 years from your figs, but otherwise we are looking at something like when cars replaced horses 100 years ago.

If I went into a Nissan Dealership over here with a Fork Lift, and upset all the electric cars in the dealer lot…..
What could they charge me with…. "Turning over a New Leaf?"

Or

I could take a 4X4 Snow plow and Push all the Electric cars at the Dealership in to a big Area, and set fire to them all….What would they charge me with "Burning Leaves?"

How long before grid lock due to charges in batteries disappearing?  Perhaps these all electric cars need a diesel donkey engine fitted for 'emergency' movement or heating  

The futures bright, the futures orange. From all the electrical fires after Barry installs his new stereo system.

And what about the fact that 75% of the "fuel" - the rear earth minerals needed to power these cars- is held/controlled  by China. A Communist country. and seriously anti the West.
 At present all major countries (including China) have oil wells and facilities throughout the world, which brings certain independence and divergence of supply, however difficult can can be sometimes.
So, we (all it seems) swap that strategic independence to 'save the planet' and then surprise surprise we find ourselves subjugated to the likes of Xi Jinping  who would, if things didnt turn out to their liking -somewhere-, would be in the most powerful position of holding almost all the worlds transport and its ability to MOVE-in his hands…Job done.

So, sell the bloody VW, buy a chinese made car , and learn Mandarin.
Go electric.
Simple isn't it. Or is it?  
Thoughts:
What is to happen to the 70,000,000 or so existing cars (in Britain alone)! Are they going to be able to recycle these? or will they end up dumped in hedgerows? What is the environmental air cost of their scrappage and the environmental cost to the atmosphere of making millions of new cars to replace them- which could be switched off at the flick of a switch!   
There must surely be another way…

Well it's hard to escape the thought that this hasn't been thought through.

I suppose putting a timescale and a deadline on it, it forces the clever engineers to work it out and come up with solutions….

It does need to happen, to save the planet, if it's not too late already….
