The online auction market is ripe for someone to do ebay what M$ did to Lotus and Wordstar and what Android/Chrome did to Windows.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

90% of transactions go smoothly, but there's a minority which will go wrong or soak up a lot of time, or you'll just lose out from.
There's a bunch of protections for both buyers and sellers, its wise to familiarise yourself with them and how they work. Its the people who think they know better and go their own way, who tend to get caught with their trousers down.

Blimey, sorry to hear that you've had this experience. Did you manage to speak to one of the customer services reps before the item was returned? If you rely on eBays automated system it will almost certainly side with the buyer regardless of who's at fault. Once I managed to get them on the phone, the representative instantly recognised the scam and sorted out the issue I had really quickly. eBay isn't perfect and there will always be those who exploit any weaknesses and manipulate the automated systems but as others have mentioned it does offer far more protection than the alternatives.Red-or-Dead said
All, just reading this. I had an issue with eBay too. The long and short of this is that even if you advertise no returns, eBay offer a money back grantee. So, if you buy some thing from eBay you can use it or take advantage of the item and get a refund within 30 days and you have to pay for the return postage. I sold an item and the buyer asked for a refund weeks later saying the item was broken. Even though eBay looked at my pictures and agreed it was not broken they said there guarantee will always get the buyers money back no matter what as it’s a guarantee. If the item broke through postage I have to claim it back through Royal Mail as one of there terms for using eBay is you can’t claim money back from them. I did get the item back which had clearly been used and it cost me 2 lots of postage.

It gets tedious reporting this to eBay - and it spoils the browsing experience, there's pages and pages of scam ads, one after the other -
it's not fair on anyone listing in classic cars, because whenever this scammer pops up, which is regularly - i have to give up browsing through the classic cars on offer.

If i sell stuff on there, on a sale, I take a picture of what i'm selling prepacked, the packaging with the item in, photo of it wrapped & labelled with address, then a photo of the receipt of posting. I send this to the buyers at the time of posting so there's no comeback off ebay. i did sell something pre Xmas, i tracked it personally through Royal Mail & 3 weeks later it was saying dropped off at 'local post office' that was it!!!!
It's not what it used to be 10 years ago when you could grab a bargain, often look for something new & with the postage it's more expensive than the high street… got to have a search about… it is what it is unfortunately.
