CAM Belt Change

Post

Guys

Doing the CAM belt on the 1.6 standard golf GTI soon which I have not done one for about 10 years maybe more….

Just belt and tensioner planned. From lifting the bonnet to turning the key how long would you say it should take. This is a side of the road job for me so need to plan around weather as well as kids….

Thanks
Craig

It all depends on if you can undo the bolts on the water pump and bottom pulley easily, losen the water pump bolts before taking the alternator belt off as you can stick it in 1st gear to help stop the pump spinning and watch your knuckes as when the bolts come lose they spin easily.

I find an hour is about the time needed, but sometimes it seems a nightmare to line up the timing marks on the intermediate shaft as that one moves very easily, sometimes its on 1st time other times its try and try again.

I would allow 2-3 hours just incase.

When putting bolts back on the water pump etc smear a little copper grease on them so it wakes it easier next time to remove them also paint all the timing marks with some white paint so they are easier to see.

Once the belt is on check and check again.
If the car sounds like it has a super charger fitted after changing the belt it's to tight.

CAM Belt Change

Perfect I was hoping it was 2 hours or less. Good point on the timing marks always forget to buy tipex then struggle to see when rebuilding. Thx
