I love Auto's.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

I recently had a 1.6 auto early Mk2.

I lasted a week before I ripped its guts out and 20vt'd it.

I love love love modern autos… but old autos are not for me at all.

I'm only joking, I'm on my 4th successive Skoda with a DSG, a Roomster, 2 Yetis, and I've just collected a Karoq this week. The Cabby box is smooth, for what it is, but it's a 26 yr old car after all,  my new Karoq has a 115 bhp 1.0 tsi with the aerodynamics of a Dutch barn, but it will blow my 1800 cabby into the weeds. Fortunately I'm too old to need out and out speed, and I've worn several T shirts out to get here! If I needed a fast fix I would just take my little 1300 screamer Escort into the hills. 48.jpg

I got 2 Auto Cabbies, and I love them.  But I spose that is  because I am a glutton for punishment…but I do love tooling down the interstate at 80-90….had it to 100 once… but it scared me…. not like in my youth constantly taking my beloved Rover3500s well over 100 and it to was an automatic.

I don't have to shift I press and go.

ps I had a stroke 20 years ago, and it scared me to have to stop on a hill then have to start without rolling into the car in the back of me…. So I auto… I can drive a clutch when I have to, but my BP goes up a wee bit….

If you do decide to tear it out…. remember you have to replace the steering rack as that has the bracket for the shifter rod.

Here is how a friend did it on his LHD

Thanks for the insights Briano. Both as to the practicalities but also for sharing your experiences. May you continue to enjoy your cabs for years to come.

Definitely stick with the auto gearbox because if you drive sensibly and look after it there fine.

A guy I know has an automatic Cabby 87 from new and he swears by it.
Apart from that converting them is a real pain in the butt and devalues the car if you care about those sorts of things! ;)

Thanks Mike. I do want to keep the car intact ,things like not cutting the interior to fit speakers are important to me.
