At what point do you say ARE YOU TAKING THE PEE?

Getting a MK1 has been a bit of an eye-opener regarding parts prices.

£200 for a rubber seal seems steep but if it's from original tooling and produced at low volume then I get that it costs to make replicas

What happens with high prices for new parts is that the price for secondhand and often substandard parts seems artificially high. Again, if you have to break a car and want to get back more than you paid it's fair enough. I also understand that these cars are 40 years old.

What about charging £15 for a piece of polythene sheet with a small rip in it?

Is that not something you could get, without the rip, from a builders merchants? It's not like it has a VW logo, is in perfect condition or is even visible in the car. It's a knackered sheet of clear plastic.

I think that is taking the P yes. But so is loads of stuff on ebay. I think Heritage sell ready cut plastics for behind the front door cards, like you said, I bought some clear polythene and made up my own. Some folk will want the convenience of a part they can just fit, I prefer to be creative and save myself some cash!

There's always been some sellers adding VW scene tax to items or selling so called rare items for silly money, just shop around or search what others have done.

And yes that's silly money for a bit of plastic, make for own out of some plastic sheeting, it's hidden behind the door card and it's only job is to keep the card dry and direct any water away from the inside of the car.

Depends what it's worth to you. You've spent the last 2 yrs restoring your pride and joy and already sunk £5/£10/£15,000 into it, are you going to mis out on that final last part you need for £15?

However anyone who spends £18 (inc P&P) on that is mad. It's a piece of polythene sheet that is out of sight when fitted.

In the past I've used the stuff that new beds and sofas are delivered in, gaffer taped into place

Shop around, eBay is fantastic and equally terrible

There were literally millions of these cars made, don't get stung by dreamers unless it's a genuinely rare  part or something you urgently need, just ask about, someone will have it

As for door membrane, you can use any decent grade plastic, the main thing is that it's stuck down all the way around properly

Gee I usually go to the Dollar Tree and get Plastic Shower Curtains.  About as cost effective as you can get, I even make the flapper vent, and seal it with foil HVAC tape.

Would like to see how you made them Brian. Door vent flap too. Would you have any images or a guide? Tia

Used the old ones as a Template, then Cut the holes for the flapper area, and covered the holes with a square piece that I affixed with Duct tape.  Not OEM but it worked. Don't have Pictures.

As far as taking a pee on things, I once spent 40 bucks usd on a single decal sticker for my 93 it was a "collectors edition" …
