Would think those dailying a MK1 is a small minority, most running as 2nd or even 3rd car for highdays and holidays.
And what is 'newer' even an 'old' 20 year old car is far 'newer' than a Mk1
When swapping between my MK1s and modern daily drivers (10year old Ford and 1 year old Volvo EV) the main thing I notice is the low geared steering takes a few corners/bends to get used to again and the crashy rattling over todays potholed and speed bumped roads.
However, esp compared to the EV, you actually drive the thing not just sit there directing it.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet
The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Main car in our house is an 8 Yr old Audi Avant, but I use the Golf as much as I can when there is no salt on the road. Puts a smile on my face every time, even if I'm sat in traffic. But speedbumps and potholes are the bane of my life. Even in the Audi they are a nightmare. Not sure I could cope with a modern car that has ditched buttons for an ipad.

Yes in 1993 i sold my 1983 1.8 gti and bought a 1989 1.9 205 gti. I didnt regret it , i thought the 205 was much prettier and a more fun drive. However when it was stolen a couple of years later (although recovered) and with the poor build quality i sold it on and bought another mk1 gti…(and a few more since)
