2.0L AEG Swap into mk1 cab

Post

Hey everyone, I'm trying to piece together a plan for an upgrade to my MK1. Main direction is to get some more power out of the mk1 (but I'm only aiming at another 20-30 Engine HP). To me the most efficient way to get this done would seem to straight up engine swap, and this makes a lot of sense since I can pick up an mk4 2.0 [whole car] for <~500$ (CAD).

But here's the catch…. I've got an automatic 1.8L 8v, I'm wondering if the engine will mate to the transmission (transfer flywheel plate) and if the starter location with still work with the AEG (since the starter is in the back by the exhaust manifold).

I haven't been able to find much info on mk1 "automatic" builds, I know it's not something that people "keep" and swap out as soon as they can. But this is a weekend cruiser for me, but the 1.8L lacks some power, especially on highways. I would like to keep the automatic while it works
