The engine code is the first 2 characters of the engine number, which should he recorded on the V5C as well as engraved on the engine block. Also on the vehicle data sticker and a sticker on the cambelt cover, if these are still present. For EX engines, there are several part numbers depending on the brand of plug. The Bosch version which is widely available is VW part number 101000005AB

Tell a lie, the part number I gave for the Bosch version appears to be no longer available. 3 of the 4 alternatives (Beru, NGK and Champion) supersede to 101000036AA, which I think is NGK

Yes, those are the ones. You'll notice they have triple electrodes, so called long life spark plugs, introduced by VW for model year 1986 onwards to extend the change interval to 20,000 miles.

NGK makes good plugs, my Cabby's Loved them.
I used the single iridium.

I used to love the Bosch triple plats until I got 2 sets with one bad plug in one set and two bad plugs in the replacement set.

I did go back to the old school days and used my Ohm Meter to test the resistance of every plug before installing.

What happens when you turn they key? Does the engine turn over without issue? How long has the car been idle? I guess you've aware that if it's a long while since you've started the car, it can take around half a minute turning the engine over to replenish the fuel lines and carb with fuel. Don't run the starter motor for more than 10 seconds at a time as this could cause it to overheat. The manual says wait about 30 seconds between each 10 second burst

when inserting the ignition wait 5 seconds between the run and start position this allows the fuel pumps to pressurize the fuel lines to prevent vapor lock and hot start issues.  (get used ) to listening for the fuel pumps to stop priming usually 4 seconds after turning the key to RUN

Terrymoyce87's car has a carb engine (like many mk1/2 VWs in the UK), so likely has no electric fuel pumps on board. Just the mechanical fuel pump driven by the engine, so the starter motor needs to turn the engine to prime the carb
