May be helpful to give an idea of your price range as they do vary a lot.
I know of a black GTI being sold for £29, 995. Is that too much for example?

1983 mars red tin top gti.. I've had it 17 years
It's fitted with a mk3 running gear.. 2.0abf on 45s with mk3 cable change box
The engine was recently refreshed by Jason of jmr
Refreshed bottom end, jmr cylinder head, cams, pulleys
Mbe Engine management. (190ish bhp)
Bigger brakes, spax coil overs..
1980s compomotive turbo splits
Retimed seats and headliner.
It's a clean weekend car that could benifit from some finishing in places. 15k if you're interested.

I would be interested in more info on the engine change , as this is the route that I would to take .
I run 40's on my 8valve ,so would like to put them on a ABF.
Cheers Calum

What do you want to know?
This particular conversion is a refreshed abf bottom end, standard valve head that's been ported to make use of the extra airflow from the Webber 45s, piper 274/276 cams, piper pulleys, piper hydro buckets, jmr inlet manifold, dub sport exhaust manifold that's been modified to clear the steering rack mated to a stainless jetex exhaust, cda code cable change 16v gearbox with hydro clutch and uprated clutch pressure and friction plate, conversion mounts, jmr solid rear gearbox mount and modified front mount to stop the engine rocking.
Mbe ignition only management, distributor swapped out for coil pack
Radtec radiator with spal fan
Mk1 cab drive shafts..
Your 40s would be ok on a standard abf but if you want the most out of it then 45s, head work, cams, and engine management will get the most out of it..
if you want to push more than 200hp out of one then your guna need better rods and pistons.. and 300+ degree rally cams which would probably have poor idling
You would also need solid lifters to make full use of the rev range.
Mine are on hydraulics so only take the revs up to 7/7.5k at a push
