I have come to the decision to sell my 1981 Mars Red MK1 Golf Gti. I am hoping to go self-employed and therefore need some extra cash to get me going, however I'm not desperate to sell the car for a silly price. I'll be looking to replace it soon with another project.
I bought this car as a stripped out road/track car (I'm unsure whether it ever got used on any track days), but have sourced the interior, including seats, door cards, seat belts, parcel shelf and supports etc and tried to get it back to a normal road going car.
The conversion to a 2.0L ABF engine was completed last August. The car goes very well indeed; just Google Mk1 ABF conversions and you will see how popular they are. The fuel consumption is pretty good as the car is light compared to the MK3 the engine came out of. I think it is about 35mpg on a journey, depends how long you can keep your foot off the throttle!!
The car has 6 months tax up to the end of August and the MOT is due end of August too.
Below are the specs of it as it stands:
Engine
2.0L ABF 16v engine from a 1996 MK3 Golf with 138,000 running on the original management
MK3 plastic fuel lines run from fuel pump to engine bay
New speedo cable and gearbox plastic gear
New throttle cable
Mk2 8v gearbox with MK2 16v clutch
Original Mk3 immobiliser and diagnostics port retained
Cabriolet wiring loom and clocks fitted
New K&N cone filter
New Cambelt
New rotor arm and dizzy cap
New spark plugs
New centre exhaust section
New battery

Fake BBS RS 15x7" ET35 wheels with Bridgstone 165/50/15 tyres with good tread
Front 280mm G60 discs
MK3 callipers, new copper brake pipes fitted with caddy forum adapters
16v 9" servo and upgraded 22mm master cylinder
Later Cabriolet 100mm driveshafts
Interior
Red striped MK1 Golf seats (no bolster wear!)
Centre console with VDO gauges
Unmarked parcel shelf
JVC Bluetooth headunit with iPod controls
Exterior
Respray a few years ago
Fuel filler relocated to rear inner wheel arch at same time and fuel filler neck renewed
Duckbill front spoiler
This car has had hours spent on it turning it from a stripped shell back to a standard car. There is no welding needed. The engine as mentioned above was given new service parts and a new rocker cover gasket when conversion was done. However, there are a few things like any car that need attention:
Headlining missing
Oil pressure VDO not wired in as I haven't sourced a sender yet
The spare wheel well had a plate welded in by the previous owner as a temporary repair I think, I haven't done anything to it.
Bonnet had pins that I removed and filled.
No paperwork from before i had the car, but every receipt for the parts i've bought and also some history of the donor car.
The paintwork is in good condition, odd spot of rust but nothing major. The car always gets tonnes of looks and once seen in the flesh will have you sold.
It has been garaged overnight since I've had it and only gets used as a weekend/dry weather car.
I have millions of pictures of the car during the conversion and can take some more as it is now if people need them, just ask.
Price £2,995
