Will be sad to see it go, but here's my MK1 Caddy pickup up for grabs!
All and sundry have shiny caddys with 1.8t's. or PD130's or VR6 etc, be a bit different and get one with a power modded AAZ running water meth that will run on used engine oil, deisel or veg oil!
Highlights: Good condition, OEM+ modifications, period-correct engine (AAZ) but running water meth! This is not your average shed-find Caddy; this is a cult classic with real usable power and all the right mods to impress dub nerds and general population car show bob.
Only TWO! former owners!!! for a 30+ year old car - from what i gather the guy that bought it new in 1992 had it until about 2020, then the dealer i bought it from bought it but didnt have it on the road, then i had it.
Great MOT history - check it out, again for age of car you would struggle find much better history, just minor stuff in there.
LOADS of photos of rebuild to show work done and the standard of the work.
Why am I selling?
A few reasons, but mostly because I hardly use it (it's one of four cars I own) and now I really need a VW Transporter.
This Caddy has NEVER EVER EVER let me down–even in winter so will be a shame to let it go especially when its been statistically more reliable than two MK7 golfs and a Lotus. I used it for work on a 110-mile round-trip commute to Preston and back regularly time and again just after covid. It never skipped a beat and always kept up with modern traffic, no drama.
The Restoration:
The truck was fully stripped, repaired where needed, repainted, and rebuilt in 2021. So when I say "new," I mean new as of 2021/22–though to be fair, it just had a load of gearbox bits and a new clutch last week as well as a new downpipe and heat shield. This Caddy is not cobbled together: it's all been done right, and I have the photos to prove it (from the moment I bought it, through the rebuild, to now). If you want the roof rack, spotlights, or ammo crate, they're extra–but the spare wheel is included!
Under the Bonnet:
Loads of engine power mods and a really interesting bay–especially with the water meth and the various tweaks. Always a magnet at shows, especially for the Dub nerds who know the AAZ engine cult, plus it's got the mods to run on diesel, veg oil, kerosene, heating oil, used veg oil, used engine oil… You name it, this Caddy will run on it! (NB: not all those are strictly road legal in the UK, but the point is, it'll run on anything without a fuss.)
I ran it for a year on pure veg oil at 50p a litre–total beast, no issues at all! Always meant to add propane blow-by and try running it on propane as well as liquids, but never got round to it. If you're into alternative fuels, this is your toy.
Performance:
The AAZ puts out over 250ft-lb of torque in a car that weighs just under a tonne. Honestly, it pulls like a train–feels like it could tow a house if you asked nicely. You can leave it in 5th, lift your foot off the clutch at idle, and it'll just get on with it, even up a hill. It's a proper "reassuring" sort of power.
Plenty of dyno vids and readouts from when we set the pump up and did the mods–happy to share those for your amusement!
Workhorse Credentials:
Still a proper workhorse. I've used it to haul engines, full beds of woodchip, endless tip runs, you name it. Thanks to the shackle kit you can still lift it up at the rear, you can actually load it up and it'll still drive beautifully. Two engines and two gearboxes in the back? No problem–and with all that torque, you won't even notice you're carrying anything.
Honest sale, so here's the good, the bad, and the quirky:
MOT: Just passed, only advisory was a small oil leak (believe that's sorted–a loose rocker cover bolt). I'll dry the engine off and take you for a drive, then you can look underneath for yourself.
Bodywork: No holes that I know of, minimal filler just to smooth out the odd dink, not to cover up rust. Minimal welding when I bought it–just the usual places. Genuinely solid for its age and photos to prove it pre, during and post respray
Driver's door: Had a ding and some filler before my ownership. If you find a good spare, maybe grab it–but it's solid for now.
Paint: Fully repainted inside and out in slate grey cellulose matte with a faint white fleck–looks awesome. Because it's cellulose matte, it's dead easy to touch up or respray yourself with a rattle can if you ever get a scrape. It just got a fresh dusting for the sale, so it's looking sharp! Only thing it needs is the side decals (£16 on eBay). If you want, I'll fit them for you if you cover the cost.
Mod list? Too much to type, but I've tried to list everything below. Basically, if it's a wear item, it's new or upgraded–bearings, brakes, engine bits, you name it. Was originally going to get a VR6 or 1.8T, but ended up with the legendary AAZ diesel. All the supporting bits are beefed up: reinforced arms, strut brace, big brakes and wheels, disc conversion on the rear, etc. Want to swap the engine later? Everything's ready.
No secrets: You're welcome to view, poke around, and go for a drive (as a passenger, obviously). I'll happily put it up on jack stands for you to have a good look underneath. Location is just outside Chester/North Wales border.
Other Perks:
Cheap to insure on a classic policy, Comes with loads of history and photos, real head turner at shows and out and about, and despite having a period correct engine swap its still fast.
Guilty pleasure - if someone gets right up your behind you can pop it in 5th and drop the hammer (stick your foot down quick)  and it will spill out buckets of thick white smoke while the turbo spools up (Basically the white smoke is unburnt diesel while the turbo spools up to get the fuel air mix right) - just like the big power diesels in the USA and people soon back off :PVintage car with modern comforts, comfortable to drive, quick, LED headlights, Good sound system, nice seats - could happily drive it to Scotland and back.
What's bad about it?:
As mentioned - you wont tell when you see it but drivers door has quite a bit of filler I think (before my time) and always meant to put another one on it at some point - normally come up on eBay for 50-100 quid.
not really a bad thing as its the same with all of them but It needs another gear to get the most out of the engine really - always meant to swap the box to a MK1 touran gearbox or a PD 6 speed box for a better final gear ratio and better bite on the clutch - don't get me wrong this 5 speed box will cruise along at 70+mph easy but if it had that 6th gear with the torque you could get much better. most the caddys came with a 4 speed believe it or not!
Nothing else that isn't true of any 30+ year old car!
If you're genuinely interested, come and see it and I'll show you everything. You won't find a more honest MK1 Caddy for sale or honest seller, or a caddy that's more fun to talk about.
