UPGRADE BRAKES/DISCS
I have an H reg clipper cab, and the brakes ain't no ABS (obviously). Has anyone changed their front disc, to vented or GTI discs, can I do a straight swop or will I need new calipers? I am guessing the GTI's will be wider?

Hi Castironlung,
straight swop mate for your existing discs to Vented ones - only difference is the brakes pads are thinner on the GTi in order to fit, you need to fit these.
cheers

Thanks for that
! Can I fit MKII GTI discs and pads, or is it only MKI, as mine is on the H plate?

Castironlung - only MK1 GTi, 239mm discs & front pads - if you wanted to fit anything bigger you would need to move the caliper carrier out away from the disc or get other calliper carriers off an old audi 80.90 quattro up to about '89.

Mk2 Gti Items should be the same…
GSF list Part Number 60170 for 239mm Vented discs for Mk1 and Mk2.

I thought the Mk2 was supposed to have much better brakes than the Mk1, if the discs are the same is it all down to drums at the rear?
What's the best way to improve the braking on a MK1 GTi?

Change the brake fluid and adjust the rear brakes correctly. Check condition of front disks and pads. Upgrade to crossdilled disks and performance pads.
If you've got more horses - go to larger front disks
That's my view

It's not just the discs that affect the braking. The brake set-up is different on the Mk2. The pedal acts directly on the master cylinder where as on the Mk1 we have that horrid cross linkage mechanism… add to that that the 16v Mk2 had a bigger master cylinder too.
As Crazyquiff said, if you set up your rear drums correctly, it really improves the overall braking of the car.

Is it possible or worthwhile to fit the larger mk2 16v master cylinder?

wonder if there's any more modern brake servo's that would be able to fit on the drivers side :dontknow:
might be a worth while mod with some investigation
probably be a easier with a carb model though, don't think ANY servo would fit with the injection manifold

A mod i will deffinately look into if i go 16v on carbs!
No nasty inlet manifold at the back of the head = loads of room!

Good man Al :y:
still waiting on this 1900 on carbs so… IF I get it, I'll try it out as well!
might give the guy another call (although he said he'd call me when he sorts it out!)
