windscreen heater vents

can anyone tell me whether there should be a trim that fits the heater vents on top of the dash?

Not originally fitted, but Turbtechnicsmk1 on here sells the kits to fit them!

Should I get heated air from the main cabin directional vents or just slightly warm air?

Thats correct. It should be cold air that comes out. The small vents above should be heated, along with screen and floor vents.
