I would go for mohair, looks soooo much better than vinyl.
They also age better.
As for keeping it clean I just wash mine when I wash the car.

It's personal choice, some like vynil others mohair.
It also depends on budget too.
Take into account other things too, like the headliner, Is that in good condition, the interliner and top pad, these are the things that should be changed at the same time, as you cannot fit them afterwards. So in order of fitting.
Headliner
Interliner
Top pad
Hood
You will also need new side and rear cables, glue, foam gasket seals etc.
Are you looking at fitting yourself as this would save quite a bit of money?

When I get my new mohair hood sometime, do Northern hoods for example offer all the parts or just the hood and cables ?
As when I get it done I want it all done properly !
Similar thing with the rear window seal, do I change what looks like it is in good condition when I am at it or let it go ?
Lastly is their any recommendations to good fitters in Scotland or are northern hoods good enough ?
Cheers chris

Hi Chris,
I am not sure what they can offer, you would need to ask.
However I am sure I can supply what they can not. For example the new Top Pads and Interliners etc.
When I asked some time ago and I am not sure who I asked they could only supply a hood and headliner.
They also informed me the Top Pads and interliners were £300.00 from VW when available.
As for the window seal so long as they apply the sealant properly, there is no reason why they would need to change it unless it's split.
I have heard of fitters saying the rear seal needs replacing as it still leaks after they have replaced it back in the car, but in reality they have not applied the sealant properly and in the relevant areas.
Another issue is the Rear window frame, these rust and crumble and do not allow a proper seal once in place.
I am about a couple of weeks away from the pads and new rear frames, as I am at the Mercy of the manufacturers.
It's taken months to sort out.
Here is one of the top pads fitted, makes a world of difference, these will not be cheap as They have to be now fire retarded which has added more cost to them.

I have not used any fitting companies before, not because they are not good, it was just to expensive for my budget, I have only heard good things about Car Hoods Northern on Here though.

I want a new mohair hood but my original vinyl one is near perfect it is hard to get the wife on side as her reply usually goes like this. - but the car only comes out when the roof is down so why do you need a new one :dontknow:
It usually stops me in my tracks but I will overcome one day.
My rear frame had some slight rusting at the bottom under the seal on the inside, so I managed to wire brush it and put rust inhibitor on it and it seems to have worked but until the roof is off you can't be to sure ?
When I do it I will do all the lot except the headliner which is in good nick.
N hoods have quoted me £500 but I have a feeling that is just the cables and mohair hood.
There is a recommended local supply and fitters not far so over the summer I will take a trip to them and get the lowdown and see what they supply and then get back to you if I need anything.
Just fitted your badge kit, they came up ace, so just need to laquer them
Already spent a fortune and just bought a full new cooling system to fit this month so mrs smith got a new handbag but luckily I am on my hols in turkey and another handbag and matching purse have been purchased so one up for me ??
Will be in touch when money is available
Cheers Chris
