Wheel arch trims

Hi,

Whats the best wax or sealer to but betwwen wheel arch trim and arches to prevent rust?

Cars been painted had new rear arches/wings fitted. Will be making fresh holes to screw into.

Before fitting the arches to the bodywork, I brushed the entire wheel arch, inside and out with Wax Oil. After drilling the new holes and fixing my plastic arches, I then covered the inside of the arches again in Wax Oil. Once all the excess was wiped off, you can't tell at all.

Its now 4 years and there isn't one bit of rust on them.

Once you've drilled the holes I'd paint the bare metal but of course if you're using self tappers you risk undoing the good work. I fitted mine the MK2 way, with the black VW pop rivets.

If you do go down the self tapper route use stainless ones. You don't want standard steel ones which will rust and encourage the body to rust too

I would definitely recommened a few coats of waxoyl though prior to fitting your arches. I'd put it on 1 layer at a time and let them dry each time. Then when it comes to fitting your arch you wont just wipe it off when you offer them up. Another TOP TIP. Unless you have front mudflaps fitted you are likely to get lots of annoying little stones trapped between the lower leading edge of the rear arches and the body. I ran a small slither of black sealant down this join. Not noticeable once you've run a damp finger down it and wiped off any excess. It'll keep those stones out of there too.

Put a smear of black bathroom sealer on the screw prior to fitting!

Will aid rust proofing between the screw and panel.

Clear Waxoyl is probably best betwen the pastic and metal + you can pump more under there in the future, then wipe of the excess. Stainless steel screws are best for fixing. I filled the holes with seam sealer and plastered the screw with it - then fitted.

Now I'm really not sure!

Hi Guys and Girls, heres the problem…….

I've just had my car back from the paint shop but the problem is that I have had the arches rolled. This means there are no arch lips to 'screw' the trims on to?!

I was goiong to bond them to the arches and I know that this is pretty permanent but I don't intend to take them off again anyway!?

What do you think? :dontknow:

but......

I still don't get why you're all saying not to permanently fix them? I get the point about not being able to get them off….but thats the plan, I don't want to take them off again?! :dontknow:

If they're bonded and sealed then there's no chance of the water or dirt getting behind them therefore no chance of the arches rusting etc etc…or have I really missed the point?! :oops:
