Side Trim rubber removal

HI,

im new to the forum and bought my first mk1 last week and i need a bit of advice please. its a 82 Gli Cabriolet.

i currently have the black rubber side trim with chrome inserts. i want to start to sleeken the look and go for just chrome strips, i noticed that the rubber can be peeled away leaving just the chrome. is this a good idea as it looks as if will have to cut the rubber off at each end.

will this leave jagged ends on the chrome or are they smooth?

Is the way to get the look or should i buy chrome strips if they are available?

im abit concerened because once i take it off and dont like it I will have to glue the rubber back to chrome and could look pony!!!

also is the standard trim hard to get hold of as i have been searching the web and cant find it eccept for 2nd hand on ebay at £50.
