Restoring glass
Unfortunately some of my glass has suffered a bit from grinding and welding inside the car before it was removed  . Has anyone used anything to restore this type of damage? Its slightly pitted with black specks where the burnt swarf has embedded.

It's ruined i am afraid , you need to look at new glass if its that bad
There was a post similar to yours Dan a while back , chap had used a grinder and ruined a set of green tinted glass . There was a reply about some special polishing kits to restore glass but it turned out it was for commercial use only .
Cheers ……….

Its only noticable when you get up close and concentrate on it or if you brush your hand over it and it only effects the o/s rear quater glass so im ok but i know its there which is the annoying thing.

there is a DIY polishing kit, seen it advertised somewhere, but think it's only good for taking fine scratches out, if it grinding marks the tiny bits of metal left in the glass may scratch it more!!!

I know that some companies can repair stone chips and cracks so i`m assuming the same techniques could be used to clear the swarf and repair the pit?. I will have to do a bit more research i think.

Just been speaking to a guy at autoglass who says he has 11 different types of windscreen listed for the mk1 golf!. He said that he could get hold of a windscreen with a green tint in it so i am assuming he can get hold of all the other glass with the green tint. Has anyone else managed to replace their green tinted galss with anything that matched the original tint? I thought that it was unavailable now?.
He went on to say that my glass will have been made by one of the four main glass manufacturers: Splintex, Triplex, Lamex, or pilkington. I cant see any of those names on any of my glass but it all has the vw logo and is tinted.

My screen has Lamex on it and a VW sign. tint matches the rest of the car, hope that helps. I would assume the years various manufacters supplied VW with ther screens.

I've got the same on my rear window.. and to be honest, I'd rather pay for some new glass than try polishing it out, considering how easy it is to get the glass in and out to!

Think i will have a look at replacing the badly effected glass. Autoglass quoted me 210 for the windscreen so think i will shop around a bit!.

Cheers for the offer. The car will be getting resprayed once all the welding is done and i have been thinking about renewing the glass altogether depending on how it polishes up. I still have lots to buy for it (including the flexi fuel lines if you are still getting them) so i will bear it mind for after christmas.
