Renovating Metal engine parts
Ok folks i have a few rareish metal parts off the 1500CC engine, there rusty as hell, for instance the timing belt cover, however some are actually ok.
Now usually i take a wire brush to the bad parts, bit of emery paper and slap some smooth hammerite on, but wat id like to know is what is the better more reliable way of doing this? to stop rust coming back for example?
Also this project im doin with the gf's little bro,so its on a tight budget.
any ideas or advice?
TIA

Check out Bilt-Hamber deox-C, http://www.bilthamber.com/deoxc.html, it chemically converts the rust to a dissolvable salt and also gives a phosphorous coating to the metal, this is temporary and easily removed. It will still need wire brushing and probably rinse and repeating, but its wroth a go.
For painting, I think powder-coating is the way to go, it provides a tougher chip-resistant finish.

I got a few bits shotblasted and powercoated and was relatively cheap. Look in yellow pages for your nearest.
Got my rear axel and a few other bits done for ?30. Brilliant job - and apparently very hard wearing

for small items i think the bilt hamber gel is excellent
for larger items like the rear beam shot blast is definately the way the go
mine is getting blast cleaned next week and powder coated
with the rear hubs prob just high temp spray in black
micko your rear beam looks spot on
