Rear hatch sticker..

Hi,

In process of painting the mk1. Rear hatch sticker showing signs of age/wear.

Can i get away with painting this section in satin black (masking of green area) or best to get new sticker if still available, heard they are a dog to fit??..

IMO the sticker looks better and either way the window has to come out to do it properly. PM turbotechnics has he does a quality one at a reasonable price.

….No they ARE a doddle to fit (but you do need to take out the screen)

I have posted a reponse to this one in the past but just for you……

You need a bucketful of warm (not hot) water containing also a mere squirt of fairy liquid and a very clean (use a new) decorator's sponge (B&Q?)

The concept is that you sponge a flood of water on your hatch and float your sticker on this to get it to the right place.  When its there simply squeegee out any water and air bubbles that get trapped underneath the sticker with a wad of kitchen roll (drive the bubbles to the nearest edge).  The edges then can be folded around the screen opening as it dries off.

Believe me it will still stick fast as you squeegee the water out but not before….you can move it around and even peel it off again if yer not happy with its location….before you squeegee it down hard!…re-wet the hatch if you do have another go.

If you don't believe me, have a practice with a sample of the material on a pane of glass or suchlike…you can get a piece of stickyback paper from your nearest signs man or even computer shop.

Do the bottom piece first and when its dried off (may a half a day or so) do the sides and lastly the top piece..each upper piece should overlap the next lower piece by about 1/8" or so (3mm to you heathens amongst us)

Make sure that the surface is first very clean and there are no particles of grit (or even dust on the surface) 'cos that'll show up as bumps on your finished sticker  (cleanliness is next to godliness when you anything on your Mk 1)

Don't be stuck-up…have a go….whatever you do, don't paint it…it'll look absolutely cr*ppy.

btw, use your (or wifey's or whatever's) hair dryer to heat up the old sticker to get it off…..be aware that you'll need some fancy brew from the paint shop to get any old adhesive residue off the hatch afore ye paints it….they'll know what you need

Cheers
