problem shutting door

hello,

ive got a problem shutting my doors on my hatch. there seems to be a vacum, the doors will shut fine if the boot is open but as soon as u want to shut one door on its own there is a problem. im getting around this problem at the momment by opening my window. i thort it was just me until my mate with a mk1 hatch was opening his sunroof to solve the problem. any one got any ideas how to solve this?  i know on modern cars theres a vent in the bodywork, is there a basic version on the golf that gets blocked?

Not sure where the rear vent's are on a MK1, possibly near the rear washer bottle. There shouls be some though to aid airflow through the car for general ventilation.

Me too - Quite common on Mk1's…

Don't think there is much you can do to cure it.
Funnily enough though, my Passenger door is OK, just the drivers door that is affected badly by it.
You could try adjusting the door strike pin so that the door does not require so much closure before the catch keeps it shut.

Adjust the door hinges correctly….

…then the striker pins correctly, found that this can be quite critical…..

ive checked that its not the hinges or the stricker as the door closes with minimal effort when the window is open.

Think yourself lucky that your car is air-tight! Lots of us have issues with the cars leaking....and we can shut the doors properly!

….as pointed out in another post about Cab AND tintop doors….
Check the little plastic bit on the striker pins.
The pins are available from VAG at about ?12 a pair !!!

I noticed on Mk1 doors there is a an air vent in the bottom right (drivers door) Gap between the door card and the door it self. I have seen a Plastic flap idea as an simple air valve for opening and shutting doors. My flap thingy is missing. I think peeps take this off so that door shuts better. If any one wants a pic of what iam on about let me know.

That 'flap' is supposed to stop draughts GETTING INTO the car, but allow air to escape (shutting doors). If it's missing you may get a cold draught around the feet of passengers in the back…….took ages to work that out on 'Old Faithfull'….

This is key to good door closing - if the plastic collar is missing or even worn enough to rotate on the pin, then you will have to slam the door to shut it when the windows are closed.

You can try to reset the location of the pin, but if the collar is worn, you'll be wasting your time…

Try getting good pins from the rear doors of 5-door Mk1's at the breakers, but DON'T try to use Mk2 ones - they are a few mm longer and will hit the body of your Mk1 door, making a nasty dent  8O
