Plate identification
Okay, I know the plate on the left is the VIN, but what is the smaller plate to the right, and what do the numbers mean?
VIN plate - left (Any clues as to what 056 B 07 indicates?)
Mystery plate - right

Dubboy's comment in this link may help with the mystery plate on the right :

Thanks.
So the 104 would indicate the build date was Thursday 6 March 1980 (if my calculations are correct). Is it too simplistic to think 1035 is the time of day?
That also leaves questions as to what Z4 and 3 0 indicate?

Correct on the build date.
1035 is the daily running number built reset to zero each day. That is the theory, in practice this process of dates/numbers applies only to the body shell, since the plate was applied in the bodyshop before paint and GA. The bodies were stored and not necessarily called off in sequence (due to batch painting see colour code below) so there is always a slight mismatch. Later in the Mk1 Golf's life the small production plate was replaced by a bar coded sticker applied to the front panel in front of the radiator that was more accurate, since it was applied later in GA.
"Z4" is the VW marketing colour code for Diamond Silver (L97A). For some reason they allocated bodies to colour after the bodyshop that meant they were'nt sequenced but batch painted (saves cleaning the pipelines). Don't know what the "30" is.
