paint code??

hi,
i have no idea waht the paint code for my RED 1980 1.1 Golf N is (Wreg)

i have been to my local dealer in search of some paint and he suggested tornado red and it looked alright on the can but once dry it was completely out, COMPLETELY!

i used the correct red primer too

if not, can anyone tell me where to find the paint code and wether it is a sticker decal or a printed metal decal please

Not great with paint codes themselves but almost certain that a 1980 car would be mars red rather than tornado red - mars red is a bit lighter and more orange if you will compared to tornado.

Frankly it's shocking that a paint shop didn't know that.

Did mk1s come in that? I ask that as a genuine question - not up on my paints.

A far as I remeber the only red available at that time was mars red.  There was two variations of the colour around at that time so you'll need to check paint code.   There should be a sticker in the boot attached to the rear panel if it's still there.

The two paint codes for mars red are…

L31B (earlier)
LA3A (later)

i see, but the paint code is missing off the inside of the rear panel,

i have been to various places to try and find the correct paint, even going to colkswagen and thay gave me three different colours, none of them i have heard of before,

i dont think it is the mars red 1
but still not sure if it is the second eather coz the mars red is orangy but mine is a real dark red looking most like tornado red in the first photo, but does look simular to mars red 2 (less orangy 1)

i dont wish to waste money trialing paint cans at a price of ?5 a go so i will just have to wait and see what happens

Are you painting only a small area? just the wing for example?
Could be the paint on your car has faded or been resprayed in the past using a non VW

Try a auto paint specialist, they can colour match your car and make a custom aerosol up.

im painting both wingmirrors the same colour as the rest of the car as i dont like them black, :x

i cannot take anything into my local paint specialist as there is nothing to remove that i could carry to it, ie mirrors as thats what i need painting

and i cannot drive the car there as it has no MOT so im a bit in the ruff with this one
     
unless you can suggest anything small enough to take to the paint shop, other than the door as someone else suggested

Are you spraying straight onto the wing mirrors or are they primed first? It'll take a few coats before the black plastic underneath stops showing through and making the topcoat darker.

i believe you only need a flake of paint,have you any stone chips that need touching up?? just raise a small piece of paint from that area.

Think youll  regret doing the mirrors.Only way theyd look right is if you painted the whole car.Have you removed the glass? now thats a right pain

In 1980 the reds used were Mars red, malaga red, canyon red and indiana red (metallic)

If your colour looks like mine in my sig (which also happens to be an '80 golf N) then its Mars L31B.

If you put up a pic of your car I should be able to tell you what it is

You will need plastic primer for the mirrors.

using primer with atleast 3 coats of both primer and top coat
