Making the parcel shelf work!??!!

Hi,

I'm very slowly restoring my '79 GTI.  Most of it is original are still there  it's got the early type parcel shelf rests - the ones without speakers and  has, fitted to the back of my proper checked seats (!), a parcel shelf with all the metal studs intact and no damage or apparent sagging, like new you could say.

After all this it doesn't seem to all work as I would expect  :banghead: .  Does it sound like I've overlooked a particular part or something?  Anyone else have the same problem?

Make sure the shelf is centrally located on the seat and aligns with the side shelves. Also ensure the plastic brackets at either end of the seat are in place and the short tethers intact.

Thanks very much for replying  :D,

I think I'm missing something by what you say.  I've got the plastic brackets which fit at either end of the metal retaining strip.  Taking a look it appears to  be the tethering strips - I can see the remains of these poking out from the shelf.

The tetherers look like they would have been about 20mm wide and maybe about 50mm long, is that right?  I take it that these would connect to the plastic brackets, fitting over and being held in place by the retaining screw?

Do you know of any pictures I can look at?

Parcel shelf fit

G'day..
It's really important to make certain the carpet is glued down to the back of the metal strip close to the rear seat. If the carpet is flapping around the shelf will be too long and no way will the hatch close without fouling it. Yes, the "black and white" short straps are really important as they locate the shelf forward enough for the hatch to close.

Cheers from Australia. Peter.

Cheers, I'll give it a try.  Looks more and more like the tetherers….

Note that if you need to replace them, they are elastic.
