Leaky sunroof

So everything for once (touch wood) is going well with the car, although we won't mention 3rd gear.

The only issue i'm having at the moment is that the sunroof is leaking…. i've had a look at it and the seals etc aren't looking too clever. Have tried Crazy Quiffs but they don't stock new seals and gubbins etc, so just wondered whether anyone know of any places that could sort it for me.

Any advice really would be muchly appreciated

Cheers

Paul

Have you been to your local VW dealer?  The sunroof is the same that is fitted to the Mk2 Golf, last time I bought one in 2005/6ish they had one in stock about £30

are the drain tubes clear? had blockages on a mk3.  also have you checked the tubes in either corner of the scuttle pannel.  these tend to cause more problems with water ingress.

When i jetwashed it a while back there was water leaking directly through the sunroof. I think the rubbers could do with changing, also the mec (lift arms) seem a little loose. Drain tubes were checked a while back but will check again. It's absolutely pissing it down outside so i'm fully expecting to come back and find my new carpet soaking wet :o(

even if the sunroof seal leaks, it should drain from the from the frame.  might be the drain tubes from the sun roof are blocked, the front drains to the door shut, not sure where the rears drain too, would think the rear arch.  If it were mine I'd open the sunroof and pour a jug of water into the frame and look for a puddle at each corner of the car.  if there isn't then you know which one is blocked.  If the water doesn't drain away then all four are blocked.  Assuming it's factory sunroof.  If its glass then maybe just two drain tubes at the front.

assuming its a factory steel sunroof you've got  :dontknow:
then another possibility could be the rear catchment plate. Water can get in there if its rusted away, even if the drain tubes are clear. There is also a thin rubber seal between the plate & the underside of the sunroof. Worth checking, tho you'd need to remove the sunroof first. Can show up as a wet / dripping headliner if thats the problem…
If the tubes are clear then check that the bottom is still protruding out from the body of the car  (the front ones can be seen sticking out when you open the door). If they've popped inside the body, the water can make its way into the footwell.

I was told that the perimeter seal around the metal roof isn't water tight at all as this is the job of the drain tubes so I wouldn't bother replacing that but find out why it isn't draining.  :)   I used to quite enjoy that refreshing splash of water down my neck when pulling away after a particularly heavy rainfall!
