Interior "What colour should an Alpine White Mk1 GTi ha

Hi,
I have currently got my Mk1 up for auction on e-bay and someone has asked me the question "why has your Alpine White GTi got red/black striped interior?"
Is he asking a silly question or has he got a point, I really don't know!
I was under the impression that the interior colour was an option when originally bought from the dealer, can anyone confirm?
My Golf is the White one on the Owners Cars Photo's page stating that I would have to sell soon, damn, damn, damn if you wan to check it out here or on e-bay.
Any help would be appreciated.

       According to the '83 sales brochure the Alpine White GTI should have a silver and black interior.

Some of them did have red interiors though, I've seen quite a few late 82 and 83 models with red stripes and a white exterior. I wonder if it's a german import or something?

My alpine white GTI has a red striped interior and a red stripe around the stereo/speedo console. Wasn't sure if the interior had been taken from a mars red? However, I have also seen quite a number of alpine white GTIs with the red interior and you mention these could be imports.

My V5 states 'vehicle registered/used overseas, declared manufactured 1981'. The car was registered in the UK in may 1982. Apart from the red interior the car seems UK spec and is a right hooker. The first owners address is near an RAF base in Norfolk, could have bought the car whilst stationed overseas and then imported into the UK?

I saw the car on eBay (Nice!) and wondered.

I think from memory I've seen more white cars with red stripe intreriors than silver!

My mates alpine white had silver/grey striped seats. I think the red ones look better in an alpine white GTI than the silver ones, genuine or not   .

Does it not say the trim code on the boot/handbook sticker near the paint code? I know the trim code is on the build sheet that you sometimes find under the rear seat. If you have access to a brochure (scans posted on here) you can x-reference it and find out what the build was.

No, had a new rear panel in the past and the sticker wasn't reattached. Haven't looked under rear seat but don't remember seeing anything there, will have a look. Haven't got handbook or manual either (have got FSH)…..

Came across a Swedish GTI site the other day. Had some scans of old  Swedish language VW brochures on it. Seemed to confirm what we have been saying. Shows GTI seat cloth colours red, white/grey and petrol colour. Also shows a 83 Mars Red GTI with white/grey seats.
