I've got a pond in the back of my golf!!

Hello,

God knows how this has happened, but after driving the golf Saturday, i reached down to get my lock from the rear footwell behind the drivers seat to be greated with a pool of water. It had gone through to the drivers footwell as well. Its as if someones poured a bucket of water in there! The waters definatly not coming from the roof, i don't think it's a door seal as theres no water on the sides of the carpet, and there are no holes underneath the car + the water isn't draining away either. Strange!! :dontknow:

Lift the carpet and find a sharp screw driver…
Place the screw driver (sharp end down   ) at the lowest point in the floor and hit the other end with a hammer!

I would give this very technical proceedure the name "Creating additional, necessary drain holes"

I have one on each side of my car!

Of course, the real problem is locating your leak to prevent the water in the first place! Check your doors - Take the door panel off and check to see if the membrain is intact. Also check the lower window seals on the out side. If these are perished, you can swap the seals onto the opposite doors, so that the outside seals now sit inside and vice versa. The inner seals tend to have an easy life and last longer!

The water may also be coming from the rear. Check your boot seal and rear light clusters.

Could also be coming through the front scuttle panel/bulkhead somewhere, so check all your grommets etc.

Best way to find it is to take out the carpets and get someone to put a hose over the car while you lie upside down checking under the dash, in the boot etc!

Good luck!
AL.

haha yeah does sound very technical. I'll have a look at what you suggested, only problem is though is that i'll probably need a garage or some good weather before dismantling bits, all i can say is its a good thing i've got a car cover. Thanks for your help!!

also check scuttle for drain blockages and small holes take the black plastic cover off and have a really good poke around. Found a repair to my scuttle which was leaking water straight into the front footwell. Fixed with some windscreen sealer from halfords.

The footwells are joined front to back so it can be misleading. If you ared parked on a hill the water will end up in the lowest footwell regardless of were it leaked.

be careful to check befor you stick holes in the floorpan using neanderthALs idea, fuel lines are under the sills.

Just kidding Al, did you get that at school?

HAHA - Very good I like it!

It is a good point about the fuel lines though. They run under drivers side of the car - the brake lines also run under the passenger side, so just be careful if you do make a hole…

I actually used a much more sophisticated method to add "Additional, necessary drain holes" to my floor pan.

Drill and an 8mm drill bit - straight through the carpet and the floor pan!
In frustration, during my younger years

I would not put any drain holes in my floorpan. It will promote rusting.

We used to get nice ponds, it was because the plastic liner benethe the heater air intake vents in the bonnet had been taken out.

And lately our screen has been leaking ( fixed now )

Penny…did you check your boot ????. I once had a leak via the rear hatch seal…water ran along the side of the boot down to where the rear seat base levers/seat belts are fixed then through a lightening hole into the rear footwell…water can also get there from the rear light fittings if their seals are getting tired.

Funny you say that about the boot actually as when i got the car back to mine after buying it i found about seven purposely drilled holes in the back behind the bumper and above the license plate, i filled them all up straight away, god knows why the previous owner felt the urge to drill holes in the back. There were also two where the spare wheel goes. So i know it's defnitately comeing form the boot. The puzzel is still unsolved!!

Dont mean to thread hijack but anyone know best place to get NEW front and rear window seals and the quarterlight ones?

Gonna have to fix it one day.

Probably not much of a hijack if penny needs to do it as well.
