Help: Replacing the Headlining...

Is it possible to replace the headlining in a golf MK1?

How hard of a job is it? I've noticed that in most newer cars, the roof lining appears to be made of some soft foam type of material. Is it possible to replace the original headlining with this new type? How do i go about doing it?

I've been told that a piece of wood is covered in the head lining material, and this clips onto the roof.

Could someone explain please?  :dontknow:

Have to do this job myself though I have dropped one before. The headlining is held up by 4 (I think!) bows sewn through it which locate down each side of the roof. It is also glued at the edges around all the sheet metal flanges underneath the windscreen rubber, rear side window rubbers, tailgate seal, door aperture seals and B-pillar trim. The C-pillars are separate sections. So to replace it you have to remove the fixed windows. If you are throwing the old one away it does not matter if you rip it, but if you want to keep it you must take your time carefully peeling away from where it is glued. Use a heat gun on a mild setting, heating up the next section while you work on the warm glue with your fingers.

Anyone any advice what glue to use on the new one? I was going to use some spray on adhesive.

Cheers

I would keep your old one to make a template from as you will probably end up making a new one yourself or having one made for you!

I got my headlining from Turbotecnics he is on here sometimes - very good quality… give him a shout.

He made a good point about refitting the headling - use bulldog clips to hold the glued edges in place till the glue dries…

Or, get all your friends and neighbors round for a headline-holding party!  :D
One hand holds the headlining, the other a bottle/glass of your favourite tipple!

Bit like 'Touch the Truck!'

the first one to let go before the glue dries gets a slap - that would be different!

sorry getting silly now
