you have to see how good there work is on other similar cars of your age and what other work was done, people have paid from 300/400 quid right up to over  2 grand, most of the time with body work the old saying you only get what you pay for is very true, my respray was fairly cheep and a year later it really shows that fact and some time in the near future i'm going to have to do it again so will end up paying more in the long term.
A grand seems a fair price but you really need to see what you are going to get for your money and keep an eye on the job they do if you do go with them.

You need to take the car to 4 or 5 bodyshops and get some written quotes. Find out what warranty they will provide on their work, look around the workshop and see some examples of their work or get some references from previous customers.

You can't give an estimate without seeing the car, what level of prep will be required, and what paint will be used.

Are they doing all the stripping/prep? If they are then its a good price, but have a look at some of their work and any work in progress to check on the workmanship.
I was quoted around 500 plus VAT for my old mk1 if I did the strip/refit and around 90% of the prep. This was by somewhere which I know are very good, and they know they can trust me to get the prep and any repairs right.

Body specialests

I found a place in derby called MKS Body specialists that do really good deals. They wanted ?400 for a full respray, i did not ask weather that included prep or not. I have seen some of their work, my mate had is 106 done there when having a body kit fitted and they did a mint job. I believe they are in the yellow pages.

having had a car painted in the past the best advice i can offer is look around where the work is going to take place 1st then look at some of the other cars in the workshop if you dont like what you see walk away to the next place. in short its your money be happy about giving it away

If you're letting them do the prep you want to see work in progress. With modern paints any trainee with half a brain can get a decent finish given the right facilities, you want to make sure whats underneath is right so you don't get any nasty surprises two or three years later.
