Fuel Tank

Just thought id take my tank out before the re spray, but i don't have a manual for the car. Does any one have any advice on this job? Ive taken off all the hoses i can get to and the two metal straps that hold the tank in. Do if have to drop the rear axle down??????   Any help would be nice.

Rear axle has to at least be dropped down and pulled rearwards but it's really tight to get the tank off and make sure you don't damage the brake flexies - best wau is to drop the rear axle right out!

There was an article in "The Golf+" Magazine a month or two back on how to replace the tank…

Anyone remember when ?

as crazy has said take rear beam right off . i,ve done this job to 2
cars now it just takes a bit of time. while u,ve got it off you mite aswell
change the brake pipes ( if needed)

So got the tank off ok, but managed to snap one of the axle mounting bolts in the process. BUG**R, not a happy camper.
 On the other hand my baby is now in the bodyshop, at last!!  Chose my colour and sorted lots of other bits n bobs at the same time. Had a bit of a brain freeze though and didnt realise that i would need my coilovers and the new wheels before he can do all the arch work, but I'm mega chuffed that the car is in the shop at last though. Just gotta wait about 3 months now

Our Drew has created this website for, amongst a lot of reasons, a source of knowledge on "howto's", etc.  The answers to a whole host of questions, eg. how to get the nuts off the axle mountings, has been covered herein and on the old campaign site numerous times.

So before y'all go do owt daft,  please use the search function that Drew has kindly provided, type in keyword like "rear axle" or whatever and chances are, up will pop some hot tips on how to do the job without kernackering everything in sight.

Check it out  Ben, you will find something in there which will suggest a way of sorting the problem that your exhuberence has created.

I appreciate what you're saying worm, but I don't think that I could have (practically) done anything to prevent this happening. I soaked them in WD for a few days and wire brushed the threads. I guess it's just part and parcel of renovating an old car. I've been amazed how easily the rest of the car stripped down though. Coming from a back ground of 205 GTi's MK1's are sooooo much easier to work on. I think I'll ask the guy who's sorting the chassis if he can sort the axle mount problem. It's all fun and games!!!!!

You can take as much care as you like but old bolts that maybe seized snap!!!!!
WD40 and brushing can help but come on, its not a guaranteed winner!!

I'd have used a nut splitted to remove the nut leaving the thread intact - doesn't help you now though…

I think its a weld up job so you wanna get new ones fitted before any paint goes on.

That sounds interesting. Didn't break any studs in the end, but undoing exhaust manifold nuts was absolutely nerve racking and a drawn out process. The nuts were totally corroded and some a but rounded off.

Seen this one on machine mart. Are they always succesful in use, is it still possible to damage the thread? Got to remove my fuel tank this year for welding - the car that is not the fuel tank ! Could well make things a lot easier.
