Driver Seat Reupholstery
After washing the Gti over the weekend I noticed that my drivers seat is actually a passenger seat in disguise!!!!!
Someone has very cleverly closed the slit on the left side and then moved the adjuster and lever onto the right side. This answers why both my front seats are in immaculate condition and not suffering from the usual bolster wear commonly found.
Does anyone or has anyone had just the black leather-like material reupholstered by anyone as this would make it a true driver seat??
Do I stand any chance??
Cheers,

The bases of the seats are handed, but the only thing that makes the seat-back different on the passenger or driver's side is the release lever, and if you look at a naked seat frame, there is a mounting for the lever on both sides of it, so changing a seat back over to the other side is easy, except covering the original release lever slot in the vinyl.
The real problem is the base, but if you take apart the bases, you can use the upholstery and foam from a passenger seat on a drivers base.

Yep, I stripped down my front and rear seats to individual cloth sections, reconditioned the cloth and also took parts of other seats to make up a good set. As the seat cloths are symmetrical you can flip the bolster sections. Incidentally, early GTi's with the tartan trim like mine use a slightly different weave of the black bolster section than later cars with stripe trim.
After that I got Dave to stitch them back up for me a put in some new piping sections. Good job he did too!!
Check he has the vinyl or get another one from the correct seat.
Good luck

A previous owner had the seats re-done in mine, replacing the black vinyl bits with leather
Looks great and not too different to the original trim, the only problem is that he didn't want to make holes in the rear seat to mount the parcel shelf, so it sort of just rests on the side panels and flops around when you open the tailgate. Must sort something out for that sometime…

Had my front seats done by Dave at DB about 2 years ago. The drivers seat was shot, usual trouble…sagging and ripped right hand verticle support. The passenger side was also sagging.
I dropped the seats off at his works and he did them in about 3 days. He had some upholstery very similar to the passenger side so the drivers was replaced. I saw numerous rolls of upholstery in his racks to cover the various styles so he should have something to suit most tastes!!
Most recommended.
