Door mirrors
My 1981 (X reg) Golf GTI has a remotely adjustable mirror on the drivers side and a plain (flag style) mirror on the passenger side. I am sure this can't be right. What kind of mirrors should the car have as standard???

Hi Paul,
My old X reg had a remote drivers mirror and a blanking plate over the holes on the passenger side. Sounds like a previous owner has added a pass. side one to yours at some point
Cheers,
Mark

So its possible I have the correct setup? I thought GTIs had 2 external ones as standard, except the really early ones.

Mine only had the drivers side - small, neat black plastic plate over the holes on the other side. It was years ago and it was a very original and unmolested car, so safe to say that's how it came from the factory. I bet 99.9% would have had a pass side retro fitted for safety reasons. I take it there isn't a hole in the pass side doorcard ?

I've had new doorcards fitted, the old ones had no hole on the nearside and the hole for the adjuster on the offside.

Sure all series 2 GTI I have seen have two internally adjustable mirrors. Series 1 had one flag style mirrors :dontknow: . Did the blanking plate mean it was an optional extra to have two? Sure Dubboy will know the answer to this.

Mine's a early '82 X and has the same flag style passenger and adjustable drivers side, original interior so sounds like it's correct to me
Edit: Meant to put Early '82! it's been a long week ops:

Hi Guys
My '82 (bought April '82) came with only a Driver's side (adjustable) mirror. On the (outside) passenger side door there was a black plastic blanking cover that covered both the mirror hole and the two tapped holes for the mounting screws. The interior door card had no obvious hole but on removing the card, the card backing material was pre-punched so that the adjuster hole could be popped out and the plazzy trim cut away to fully expose the hole. The door sub frame was holed ready to accept the adjuster mounting ferrule/nuts. So, some time ago, I fitted an adjustable mirror the pass. side and the fitting was a breeze. The same adjuster knob and door card grommet is used as on the Driver's side.
Wouldn't be without it.
Cheers

Thanks guys, it seems that the absolutely correct specification is to not have a mirror. I guess the chances of finding a blanking plate are near zero, though (then again, scouse probably has them!)
I have another old, classic car without a passenger side mirror and its a complete pain in busy motorway traffic, etc so I'll be having one that side. The driver's one is peeling its plastic coating off, so I am hoping to pick a decent one up soon. I just don't know whether to purchase a remote-adjustable passenger one too!

Methinks it was still an "optional extra" else VW wouldn't have gone to the trouble of incorporating the "provisions" in the door.
imo it would not spoil the authenticity of your golf if you do fit one.
I got mine new from the VW dealers several thousand moons ago but I did get a "spare" off e-bay recentlyas a replacement if/when necessary…I still see them for either side on occasion (did have to replace the driver's side mirror about '88 when some tw*t tried to occupy my side of the road with his mirror!
