Chasis leg welding

Hi,

I've just bought my first mk1 gti and it's a real find everywhere except in one place… the drivers side chasis leg has rust where it meets the front of the car.  It is going through an MOT before it is given to me.  I was wondering… is this an MOT failure and if not then how bad is it to have rust here and how much to cut out the corrosion and weld in a new section (plus spray to cover it?  Any help from you guys would be grately appreciated

Not sure where you mean, do you mean the corrogated leg within the engine bay (where the bumper bolts into). If so, then this is not an MoT testable area unless its within 30cm of the suspension strut or engine mount.

Hiya Paul,

Yes I beleive it the corragated arm that the engine mounts are attached to.  It's right at the front of the car where the arm meets the front valance and the bumper bolts into!!

Here is a picture of the arms circled in red

The drivers side is the issue where it meets the front valance

These photo's are not of my car but are just to visualise where the rust issue is.

Any further help or info would be brilliant.

P.S The car went straight through it's MOT so just wondering how much the welding would roughly be.  I'll post pics of the actual area when I receive the car in the next week and a half.

Thanks.

Very hard to say without pics of your car. You talk about welding, but this would only be the case if the steel had rotted through which is very unusual in that area as it's quite thick steel. If it's just surface rust you could clean it back, rust treat and paint.

I was gonna say before you posted the pic but its reaffirmed it - basically I think what's happened is the car's had a new front panel at some point in its life (they do rust, a bit….) and whoever did the work didn't thoroughly prep & paint the welds. If you can get to it (Dremel?) then wire brush down then stonechip then topcoat, should be okay and sort you out.

Thanks for the pic rich_h.  Thanks paul_c it seems straight forward enough.  I'll get onto it straight off so that it's done and dusted.  Cheers for all the replies.
