Cabrio Springs
Hi,
I have a '91 Cabrio with a saggy back end, I suspect the local VW dealer supplied tintop rear springs rather than genuine cabrio springs. Where can I buy genuine rear springs from someone who knows what they areselling. I do not want to lower the car as it runs on 15" 185 BBS RA's and clearance is tight.
Thanks for any advice.
Tim

I'd be taking them back and ranting!!! plus expect them to cover the cost of fitting
So many dubs so little time, so much rust

Perhaps go back to the dealer and make sure they sell you the correct springs?

Original (genuine) springs are colour coded. If you have your originals then look for a spash of paint on them, they should be able to give you the correct ones from this.

The original springs came from GSF, so I ordered a new set from a VW dealer and I hope that he has provided the correct part. They cost about ?57ea hopefully they will stop the soggy back end.
BTW, the car has just had a set of Golf2 15 195 BBS RA's bought for it, I wonder if they will fit?

This is spooky  I was just about to post a thread asking for advice on rear springs/dampers for my cabrio. I have recently fitted a set of ex Mk2 16V BBs RA's with 195-50-15's and they are catching the plastic arch and I suspect coming very close if not rubbing on to the inner arch too whenever the cars bottoms out or I'm coming off a speed ramp. The cabrio is a 1987 GTI and it too seems quite saggy. I know there is extra weight in a cabrio shell and wondered whther I should invest in standard new springs or search fora more heavy duty spring/damper set up. :dontknow:

my girlfriends car is fitted with 15 bbs ra 195/50 when standard height no rubbing problems and now lowered 40mm still no rubbing problems.except with 3 people in the back (LARGE people) and over big bumps. car is 1984 so no body kit. suspension kit which i cannot reccomend highly enough was bought from proven products and one of there own kits. it was good value for money car rides perfect not to hard not to soft.

Maybe, it is a problem if:
a) You have a body kit (mine is late '91 with full kit)
b) Saggy back end
c) Lowered
d) 15 195 RA's
I suffer from three out of four of the problems but I waiting for the new VAG springs to be fitted. In the meantime, I am fitting some 14 195 Passat alloys which at ?40 for five cost about half the value of one BBS RA.
Anybody want a full set of some nice BBS RZ's?

a) It's been fitted with a clipper kit and that's whats currently being worn away by the tyres but it must only come inwards from the metal arch by 1-2mm.
b) It does sag a bit
c)Standard ride
d) Were these fitted on Sportlines though ??

I have a sportline and they do have 15" RA's, I'm pretty sure its lowered too, but I dont know what the setup is (the rear springs are actually odd!). I dont get any rubbing with a full car. I guess you must have a problem with the shocks or springs?

Hi,
I've just fitted the Cab with my BBS RA's (thanks Ebay) - no clearance issues despite the fact that I have not fitted the new VAG springs. The wheel data is ET35 15H2 7J whilst the old wheels are BBS RZ's ET33 14H2 6J
The visual effect is stunning and not a great deal of money, in fact less than a set of the cheapest wheels (no rubber) from Halfords.
Why didn't I do this before?

I got 16's on mine and it has been lowered 45mm.
I only get wheel rubbing if I have real heavy ppl in the back, even then it is only when i hit a bump or something

hi mate got a cab 1990 with all the kit and bbs rvs and i have only had problems with the wheels catching the artches with three people in the back.and i was gunning it down an uneven road at the time.you springs sound like they are shot, cut down! do the shocks hit the end stops or does the wheel artch come first? i would lay money on the springs not having the right amount of strength in them(off a mark1 hard top)

Soltution sorted……
I've taken my BBS's off and parted with the car.
If you saw any earlier threads you'll see a swap deal was in the offiing for a 4x4. Well the deal went through.
Now I can pour all my enthusiasm into my tin-top
