I can push the button in from the outside but the lever on the inside misses the latch so doesn't push it down releasing the catch so you can lift the tailgate. Does the following picture look correct. Luckily at the moment the piece of trim on the inside of the tailgate is off so i can crawl through as reach through the boot to release the boot using the catch manually, but i'd like to give my back and knees a break!!

it looks to me as if the lock is in the locked position, but the lock has been put in the wrong way, so what you'll have to do is take the lock out and turn it round so the bit that sticks out is round at the top and pointing right instead of left (the lock will now be in the locked position and you'll have to turn it with the key),
so to do this take out the circlip which you can see to the right of the lock in the indent of the plastic housing, prise this out and the metal ring which slides onto the lock will follow, then you can pull the lock out of the housing turn it round 180 degrees and put it back in, there will also be a spring on the end of the lock so make sure thats still in place, then just slide the metal ring back on and push the circlip back in. I'm pretty sure thats how to do it if i remember correctly and what you need to do so hopefully that made sense and it'll work, but worth a try anyway as its easy to do

does your key work in and turn the lock?

did similar with mine as my key wouldn't work in it, took it apart and swapped a few pins around so the key would fit and it works a treat, need to sort my door lock out now though, started to worry me when i found i could unlock it with anything that would fit in the slot…
reckon its had a new ignition barrel in the past and the person didn't bother sorting out the boot or door locks, and just took the pins out the drivers door lock, need to get a bag of pins from vw (if they still sell them) and do all the locks properly
