Bonnet support arms

Hello, i'm looking for some help regarding the bonnet support arms on my mk1 golf gti cabriolet until recently they have been ok. The drivers side one has started making a knocking noise when driving or while ticking over at traffic lights it sounds like a metal sort of noise clanging !!!!!! The noise sounds like its coming from the back of the dashboard to the right of the clocks. Can you get to that area from under the bonnet or do you have to get behind the dash !!! any info would be very helpful

You can get to the bonnet hinges from under the bonnet. When you lift up the bonnet is the driver's side hinge loose at the back then?

Hi, i have had a look under the bonnet and the two bolts that hold the hinge to the bonnet are tight it must be at the other end of hinge that fixes to the car under the scuttle panel windscreen area that must be loose are they bolts or some sort of pins that hold it together ???
