Blanking plate?

Can anybody tell me in what year (if at all) the three dials just infront of the gear stick were taken out and replaced with a blanking plate or if there are just very few of them still available? Many thanks.

they where a dealer fit option, so all GTIs from the factory regardless of year would have been blanked off unless ordered with dials some times one or all three I've never seen one with just two ??

I think the series 1's have space for 2 gauges.

There should still be 3 holes under the blanking plate  :dontknow:

The actual guages were never fitted as standard. 90% of those that have them now are from Audis. With the senders they can fetch @?60 on 'tbay

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

The blanking plate just covers the three holes so can soon be whipped off to reveal holes for 3 VDO guages. Earlier cars with conical dash clocks just had two holes in a much narrower console and housed a quartz clock and voltage guage as standard. Basically the same set-up as a MK1 Scirocco.

The series 2 Mk1 Gti's had one VDO with 2 round blanking plates. The Campaign Gti had one large blanking plate that covered all three round holes (had no VDO's in centre console). Not sure if all '83 Gti's had this large, rectangular blanking plate though (it's possible all MFA equipped cars had the big blanking plate ?). You can often find this plate on the higher spec 1983 non-Gti models & Jettas if you're looking for one, though not always in black.

The following was fitted as standard from the factory. Otherwise they could be fitted as a dealer accessory.

Series 1 (MY '74-'80) - 2 gauge positions in centre console

L, LD, GL = 2 round blanking plates
LS, GLS = clock, 1 round blanking plate
GTi = clock, oil temp gauge

Series 2 (MY '81-'83) - 3 gauge positions in centre console

L, LD, LS, GL, GLS, GX, GTi with MFA (inc Campaign) = 1 rectangular blanking plate covering 3 positions
GTi without MFA = oil temp gauge in centre position, 2 round blanking plates
GTi 16S = oil temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, 1 round blanking plate

Round blanks were always black, rectangular ones were in black, blue, and brown. Maybe red and green too (?)
