waterless cooling
Hello people, I was watching wheeler dealers the other day and noticed a very interesting idea they used
Its waterless cooling, sounds fantastic and is usable for a lifetime
Has anyone tried it? Ive had a few issues with cooling the last couple of years and overhauled the system, just wondering if this is the best way to preserve the system.

Used to run Evans Waterless Engine Coolants and some other brand i think it was Hydratec ?
in some classic race cars i looked after and have nothing but good comments about it

Very expensive, one faulty h/gasket or small leak.

looks interesting, would it work and still put heat through the heater matrix.

Bert, Practical Classics mag is saying that the modern pink/red/purple 'OAT' G12 type antifreezes can cause problems in old (pre 1995!!!) engines, just after this summer when I've changed both the MK1's from the older blue G11 stuff.
What are other peoples experiences/thoughts?

Dont worry,ive even got my central heating system at home full of g12,no rusty leaking rads for me :wink:

I read that the pink VW antifreeze could effect the rubber hoses on older engines but I had it in my mk1 for 4 years without issue.

I saw it at the classic car show - had a good chat to the chap on the Evans stand.
It is a good product but has a couple of drawbacks:
(1) It is expensive both for the fluid and the flush that you need to put through to remove the water first.
(2) If you get a leak or a hose failure you need some more, realistically you need to carry enough to fill your engine with - so cost goes up again, you are talking £150 to get going with - that is a lot of water + anti freeze !!
I think it has its place in race cars

£150 feels like a big investment especially as I flushed out the system and refilled with a good quality anti-freeze before the onset of winter. My motor has now covered ninety thousand miles and I feel that as an engine tear down gets closer the anti-freeze option remains the best route for me. I like Bert's idea of putting anti-freeze into the home central heating. Beats using Fernox

What's the typical coolant capacity in the mk1? 5L should cover it right?
