the mythical creature
Morning all!
In my quest for the perfect running engine, it has come to my attention that on warm up and initial cold driving the old girl is like driving a bag of spanners!! When warm no issues.
I've read lots about a warm up regulator, or "cold start" valve. However when I call parts supplies I may as well be speaking French.
So does anyone know a part number for the unicorn, sorry, warm up regulator!

Warm up and cold start valves are two different components.
Depending on which engine (DX, EV etc) you could check this link, (for item 21):-
partsbase.org
However there may be other reasons, including checking the cold start system, item 28:-
partsbase.org
You could also read Rubjonny's article which (although written for a Mk2) covers most of the points for a Mk1.
Good luck! There are various causes for the symptoms you give, so I suggest you have another go based on the above. If you've no success then I suggest you post again in the hope of getting wiser heads than mine to guide you.

I have a spare 5th injector with gasket and a spare Warm Up Regulator from my DX engined GTI.
If you are interested private message me 👍
I was keeping them as spares but will sell them if it's helping someone.

Don't think that simply replacing a warm up regulator with another will solve the issues. Any WUR fitted, needs to be set up properly, in fact I bet yours isnt set up properly but still works. Garages have probably forgotten how to do it now.

This may sound daft... But would low fuel/ dirt in the tank cause it to run badly? I filled up the other day and runs like a dream again!?

Make sure the gauze is clear in the pipe that goes to the WUR mine felt a bit under powered and messing about when starting, cleaning it solved it

a working warm up regulator doesnt need any setting up, fit and forget. its finding one that works, and hasnt been fiddled with thats the trick.
you'll probably need all the basic idle and co settings reset though if its been tuned with a bust wur
