A few of my vacuum pipes are burst so I am going to replace them. What is the Id of a vacuum pipes on a gti? And would a 1 metre length be enough to replace them all?

thanks in advance

the rubber braided type hose? 3.5mm i/d is what you want. if you want overbraid type go to VW for this, its expensive but it lasts unlike the cheap pattern stuff! you can get black silicone vac hose off ebay that stuff is ok by all accounts

1m is plenty to replace them all, you should have enough left over to do it again unless they have been changed before and are a lot longer than the original length.
I did lengthen some of mine so they are routed better but still had plenty left.
I did buy the cheap pattern stuff from a VW show for a couple of pounds but I do have to replace them every 3 or 4 years as they do start to crack on the ends, my car is a daily drive.

Thanks for the replies. I bought some 3.2mm stuff out of halfords and there was no way it would push on to the fittings it needed to. Should I just enlarge the hole at either end of the pipe so that it fits? The hole probably needs to be 5-6mm to fit on the fitting

Not sure what you mean, have you got a picture of part you need to fix the hose to? The 3.5 stuff if fitted to the dissy, MPG guage, fuel enrichment etc.

The first and second photos show the pipe (the one against my hand) the third picture show the fitting it needs to go on and the forth is a picture of the pipe hole size. Is this the same as yours? You can see from the forth photo that the hole is bigger than 3.5mm. This is definetly causing my low idol as the idle speed changes as I move the pipes around.

The pipe then goes down towards the distributor where the pipes are in an even worse condition

That was the hose I was talking about, I'll try and find a link to some.
Looking at your pictures I'm not sure it's all plumbed in right, what year is your car?
Do you have this valve fitted at the end of the yellow pipe? That may be why it is different if you don't have the valve…

On my 1988 car the yellow pipe is the fuel enrichment valve, white hose goes the MFA MPG guage. The black hose going to the dissy comes from the back of the throttle body near the idle screw.

My car is a Y reg 83 gti hardtop. I'm positive I don't have that valve with the yellow pipe (not in that location anyway)

Thanks for the link mark, I'll get some ordered up

I guess that's why it's a different lay out being an earlier car than mine. I don't think yours will have that valve, it's there to enrich the mixture if you floor it when cold which is never a good idea on a cold engine.

Another thing that I noticed on the car the other day was this hole in the inlet manifold. Is this normal. it looks as if something may have been covering the hole at some point but has been removed

yes the valve is on late models, not on tintop gtis. is that hole sucking in air when the car is running? if so you need to block it off

Normal to have that hole there it drains and oil and water which collects on the inlet manifold.
I've got a one on mine.

It doesn't feel like it's sucking in when the car is running so it must be for what mark has said.

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated
