Temperature gauge

I have a golf clipper on a K plate and has been running like a dream of late. However, for the last couple of days my temperature gauge has been flashing constantly It is not over heating, as it began to flash when I was on the motorway cruising at 70 and it was not even half way hot. I have checked the water and only just put some new magnatec oil in.

What do you guys think the problem may be?

Temp gauage will flash with low water or high temp when working correctly.  If either of the senders go bad that could cause a bad signal.  Best bet is to get your multimeter out and test the senders and wiring.

Thanks for that. Its not high temperature and Im sure there is enough water, Im not very good with things like that, so do you think it will be expensive if i took it to a garage, ideally a VW dealer? So you think it may be an electrical problem, not a mechanical one?

Well if temp is Ok and you have water it can only be an electrical one imo.

Really not sure what a garage would charge, but just to test the senders would only take 10 mins!

Do you not think it may be the thermostat as someone has suggested to me? Do you think I should take it to a garage to look at it or carry on driving it?

If the temp gauge is showing normal temp and the car is not overheating then should be OK to drive.  I would get it checked out sooner than later though so you are sure.

I think its quite a common problem for the LED to blink when it shouldn't. I think there have been several posts before about it.

I have the same problem on my cabrio and I found that whacking the top of the dash stopped it blinking!
My problem therefore is definitely with the dash or the wiring behind it. I took the dash apart and checked the circuitry but couldn't see anything wrong with it, the blinking is now more constant! but sometimes it doesn't blink at all. it doesn't respond to a whack anymore either

I need a second known working temp guage and LED to swap out and test.

I have the same problem on my Mk1 cabrio - the light tends to flash a couple of times when I drive over a bump or down a steep hill, but the dial stays well to the left of vertical.

Also, on the digital display, the oil temperature sometimes goes up to 102 when I'm in heavy traffic and is around 96 when I'm cruising. My Mk2 GTi ran at about 86 degrees - should I be worried about the Mk1?  8O

When I got my Cabby the earth strap to the rocker cover had come off and made the temp gauge indicator blink when the ignition was switched on (along with all manner of other things too) but went off when the headlights were switched on. Maybe check that the earth is good to the rocker cover??

Mine runs at exactly the same temperatures, you dont have anything to worry about.

My earth on the rocker cover wasn't connected when I bought my car as well, but is now. When I took the dash apart I noticed someone has made a new earth point for the instrument cluster behind the cluster. Haven't removed it yet but would be interesting to see what the result is.

I've found a couple more electrical bodges since owning the car. The latest find is a rats nest of bodges for the alarm/immobiliser around the ignition switch. I dont want to disturb this bodge until I know I have enough time to sort it properly.

The first thing I did when I got my car was to remove the old alarm/immobiliser so that I knew that what was on worked correctly!! Best thing I did
