TDC
Right can see the punched holes on the sprockets, line the top one up with the front of the cam cover.
Problem is the v belt pulley don't seem to have a noticable notch in it. Also I've taken it off and dare say it won't go back on in the same position.
Any other bright ideas on how to check TDC so I can get the cam belt off.
Will it be enough to line up the top sprocket, and check the mark on the dizzy????

You?re supposed to set the TDC/crank via a notch on the flywheel that you can see thru the hole in the bell housing, the green plastic plug thingy. Mine doesn?t line up? :dontknow: It does have an arrow embossed in the lower cambelt plastic cover but no mark on the fan belt pulley, to line it up with. I have a Haynes type manual that says GTI Siroccos used this mark but gawd knows why they would be different than MK1 Golfs?
I went back to 1st principles and found TDC of no1 cylinder and marked the pulley to line up with the embossed arrow. The pulley has a dimple in it so its easy to put back where it came from.

YEah I got the dimples but nothing on the fan wheel the same and can't see any other markings.
How did you set your TDC of the No 1 cylinder what method did you use for that.

I've got to do this before removing the cambelt, and ultimately the head.
I plan to remove the spark plugs (carefully labelling each lead so I get them back on in the right order  )
Then I'm going to stick a screwdriver, or preferably wooden cocktail stick into the spark plug hole of cylindre 1, and turn the engine over with a socket on the crankshaft nut, until both cams (the cam cover is off) are in the right place (inlet and exhaust closed), and the spot on the cam wheel lines up with the head, AND the cocktail stick shows that the piston is at the top of its travel.
Sounds sooooooooooo easy, but I just know it's going to be

Alicabrio has it about right. The cam lobes should have both pointy ends in the air on No1 cylinder, like the English salute to authority.
The rotor arm should be pointing to the mark on the rim of the dizzy also.
I?d use a big screw driver rather than any bits of wood that might fall in or get snapped of. 8O
You only have to do this if your notch on your flywheel doesn?t line up when all the other marks do? :dontknow:
I think on the pulley the 4 bolts are not evenly spaced so you can?t put it back wrong? :dontknow:

Well I'll do a few of the checks and mark everything up and hope for the best. Parts won't be in until Tuesday but I'm going to get the cam belt off and the sprocket this afternoon, then all I've got to do is refit everything and pray it still isn't leaking oil.

I'm taking the head off so any broken bits of kebab stick should get cleared away.
Now i just have to find a kebab shop - bang goes the christmas diet

If you've not started the job (taken the cambelt off) yet, then its easy - simply mark the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys with Tipp-ex. It doesn't matter if its not TDC so long as you put the stuff back in the same place. Don't forget you remove the crank pulley in the job, so mark it relative to the crank.

Yep all marked up. Cam pulley dimple lined up with the rocker, rotar arm lined up with the notch, piston one at its highest position and then the intermediate shaft pulley dimple lined up with a tipex mark on the other sprocket. Surely can't go wrong. Looks like its on the the intermediate sprocket that will need realining anyway.
