Sump Gasket Replacement

I am just about to replace the sump gasket on my 1.8 8v GTI engine.

Is it ok to just replace the seal, or would it be a better job to use some type of gasket paste too - like loctite instant gasket?

Thanks, Michael

I would not use sealant. Do you have the rubber or cork gasket, as the VW rubber one is the one to go for. Either way torque up the bolts correctly using a diagonal pattern and it won't leak.

Thanks for that.

I'm nearly sure its rubber (Its at home).

I got it from Euro Car Parts - Part No. 367440021

If it is rubber, would it do, or would I be better with a VW one?

Thanks, Michael

Never seen the Eurocarparts one. The VW one has brass inserts at the holes, I assume for allowance of slight torque variation.

Ive been told about some VW gasket sealant compound. Its 7 quid a tube from VW parts. This stuff they use for gearboxes and sumps. Must be good if they use it. just a thought tho.

Checked the Euro Car parts one last night, it looks like cardboard. 8O

Reckon I will just get the VW one - sounds like a better job.

Thanks for the replys.

I wouldn't bet on it, if they do the job right a properly fitted gasket shouldn't need sealant. More often than gaskets are overtightened and crushed causing leaks. Probably use it it so they can do a quick job without worrying about leaks.

i must admit i like the gasket approach. The rubber one is lots better than the cheap looking cardboard type.

That VW sealent stuff, a m8 of mine rebuilt his gearbox with it, quafe LSD kit installed. Bolted to a 1.8T bored to a 2L with the 20V big port head. Upgraded turbo to some mutant garrat thing..1000CC injectors on Motec. mapped by Owen developments, last time it was at marks, around 417HP and the sump was glued to the block with this stuff. He must belive in a VW sealent god..lol

its done the summer on some tracks this year without leaks. Mind you i rekon the petrol tank need some of this stuff, seems like he got a very big leak in that one..lol
