starter motor problems
alright
my car did not start properly
i thought it was a flat battery, checked and charged and it was the same. no cranking of the engine
however for a few days after if i tried starting it again, eventually the car would start, therefore
next step was a new starter motor……….
i went to gsf and bought the one with the 90184 part number
i am not sure if this is correct as it bolts up etc as it should
however the starter motor grinds within itself, it does not crank the engine
have i done some thing wrong?
i have also changed the brass bush in the bell housing.
thanks

Did you compare the cog on the end of the motor, with the old and new starter? Same number of teeth? Did the old one make grinding noises?

i literally whipped it off at 10 o clock tonight, and stuffed the new one in
i have no car, because of this problem
need a very quick fix, i will have to try again tomorrow
i just took gsf's word for it

Its either a different part (which doesn't fit right and grinds) or you've fitted it wrong. I didn't think there's much to go wrong with a starter tho, you push the end into the bellhousing and it locates on the bush, and then bolts in?

ye thats what i have done, slide it in the bell housing, tighten the two bolts up, it sits flush etc looks properly seated. so this is why i am confused
on another forum the part number i gave is ment for a 16v engine, but apparently they are the same, is this correct?
saying that the casing of the new starter has 3 bolt holes as apposed to 2, is this becuase its not a standard part, and made for both 8 and 16 valve engines?

If its got 3 bolt holes its prob for another car,
Take starter off, connect 2 wires from battery the starter should spin and seen to be engaging,
Get part number and ring gsf for confirmation of right part,
Maybe the teeth were not meshed when you fitted it ?

Mk2s need 3 bolt holes, because of its front engine mount but, but apart from the bolt holes they're identical so a Mk2-compatible starter motor will fit a Mk1 smoothly. Obviously nobody's going to stock 2 lines when one will do the job of both. So the bolt holes are a non-issue.
My guess is the cog on the end of the starter is wrong (different) or the bush isn't in. you need to put the old and new side-by-side to compare.
