Speedo cable drive

I have a 1983 1.8 Gti. How does the plastic speedo drive attach to the end of the speedo cable?

Its just pushed on to the end of the cable 

Ok but is there not a circlip or something to hold it together?

yes, you must get the circlip off the old cable or the drive will fall into the gearbox either on insertion or if you ever need to remove it..

Oops. I havent a clue a to what i did with the od cable.
