Sheared Bolt

I was replacing my thermostat and when putting the housing back one of the 10mm bolts sheared off in the thread.

How do i go about removing the offending bolt ?  any help much appreciated.

Is there any thread exposed? If so, and there's enough to tighten 2 nuts against eachother on it, then that's a good trick. If not, is there enough of it exposed to get a decent pair of mole grips on it?

The other thing you can do to loosen any bolt is to heat the surrounding metalwork before you try and remove it - a blowtorch is often the easiest way, but be careful not to melt anything or set anything on fire. Also be careful that you don't touch stuff you've heated up - sounds obvious but it's easily done and can be very painful!

Once you've got it free, run a tap down the threaded hole to clean the threads up (be careful not to cut new threads). A 10mm head generally means an M6 thread.

Post a pic if you're still not sure and someone can advise further…

thnaks for the reply,  there is not enough of the thread exposed to attempt yuor suggestions.  will post a pic first thing tomorrow.

Looks like you maybe need to try & drill it out then. Start with the smallest sharpest drill-bit you have then progressively increase the size until you are as near the 'wall' of the inside of the bolt as possible. You can then either try picking it out with a sharp impliment or the correct tap from a tap & die set.

may be easier to buy a new water pump?

yea i was begining to think about the new water pump route

going for the new pump route will be picking it up tomorrow.

you may have already gone for a water pump? so for future reference or any one else here is an option; drill out as wide as you can go without touching the thread (like previously said!) then you can purchase a set off tools called a EASY~OUT from halfords (other retailers available??) for a few queens?
this tool is similar to a tap and dye set which once you have made a pilot hole winds it self in with a left hand thread and tightens up and most off the time if patient enough will remove the offending stump? :dontknow:
