Rear of the 8v engine

Hi all, got a question regarding the 3 circular blanks below the exhaust manifold on the rear of the 8v 1800 gti engine 1982… How bad is it when one of them leaks a teeney weeney bit?

Really bad i'm guessing… Dammit, new engine time i guess…

Hope someone can tell me otherwise….

Cheers

Sounds like core plugs. Basically, they're little blanking plates over holes in the engine block which are necessary for tool access during its manufacture.

You should be able to remove the leaking core plug and replace it with a same-size new one, to cure the leak. However, I imagine access is difficult/impossible where it is. Hence, there's plenty of wonder products in a tube which have been developed, which could seal the leak (you'd clean up around the area, then apply it, then let it dry or something like that).

there was product called gum gum once apon atime not sure if you can still get it, its grey like play dough but left in the air it turns rock hard i used it once to seal a hole in a water pipe i could not get hold off for less then 70 so i tryed it and it worked and i belive its still holding out after 8 years nearly

Hi just changed the exact same core plugs on mine as one popped out they cost 50p at the VAG dealers Id recommend that you change them if they are leaking as the holding seal is compomised and the coolant system pressure will force them to pop out its enevitable and you dont want it happening when your out and about just tap the new ones in with a rubber hammer and also use lock tight flange sealant on the edges of the plugs and the inside of the holes on the block just tap the old ones out with a punch to the centre of the plug or use a chissel
